Something else to keep in mind... NONE of the major cell carriers in the U.S. AT&T, Verizon, Sprint or T-Mobile, have/are implementing a "4G" network that actually meets the standard defined for "4G". They are rolling out a data network that is faster than 3G, different from the other carriers, and using "4G" as a marketing term.

Down the road, this is going to cause quite a few headaches for phone manufacturers.
Of course, this could also spell the end of people hacking and jailbreaking phones to take them to another carrier... Won't do much good when it won't work on their 4G network because it's totally different tech. From that perspective, I guess it may be a pretty smart move on the part of the carriers.

Verizon has launched their LTE network which means it meets the world standard for 4G. Unlike AT&T and T-Mobile who claim they have a 4G network but in reality they both use a 3.5G HSPA+ network.

To better understand the differences between HSPA (3G), HSPA+ (3.5G) and LTE (4G) I've provided some links below for you and other readers here to read. To much confusion has been caused by AT&T and T-Mobile mixed message regarding what their network really provides. It's unfortunate the FCC in the USA doesn't have the same power that the CRTC does here in Canada to ensure standards are complied with by all telecoms in the country.

I'm not sure why people are saying that ATT claims to have 4g, their own website only Claims HSPA+ and that LTE is on the way. If LTE is 4G, then it's on the way, they have not actually opened that up yet. Also, I have compared my AT&T iPhone 4 Web browsing to 4G speeds of an Android phone with a friend of mine, and I really could not see any speed difference at all. We tried multiple websites and I actually felt mine was faster, and yes, he was on a 4G network at the time.
