"Quit Unexpectedly" errors since 10.4.1 to 10.5.8 update

My old iMac (2 Ghz G5) (Mac OS X 10.4.11) has been running fine for years. But I updated the OS to 10.5.8 (a DVD install) yesterday because there's an application I want that only runs on 10.5 or later.

Everything appeared to go well until I tried to scan a document with my HP Scanjet 5590. I got a "HP Scan Pro quit unexpectedly" error message. And I got that same error message every time I launched HP Scan Pro.

So, I uninstalled the HP driver and application software that came with the Scanjet 5590 and downloaded the current drivers and application software from www.hp.com/support The new install finished OK, but I'm still getting the same problem when I run HP Scan Pro. It quits every time.

What am I to do?

Welcome to Apple's discussion groups.

Launch the Console utility. You may see messages that explain why that program quit. You may also be able to find (in ~/Library/Logs) a "crash report" that will show more information.

I have the same problem: 10.5.8, I just got a HP scanjet 5590, I downloaded the drivers from HP:

when I try to start HP Scan Pro, I get the console error:

Which ones? That page lists a driver for Mac OS X 10.3.9 and 10.4 (which may be too old for 10.5) and software for OS X 10.6, which also may not work with 10.5. I'd try "HP Photosmart Studio" if that wasn't what you already tried.

24.02.11 21:30:42 ReportCrash[757] Saved crashreport to /Users/loic/Library/Logs/CrashReporter/HP Scanjet Manager 2011-02-24-213040heat.crash using uid: 502 gid: 20, euid: 502 egid: 20

That message tells where it stored the "crash report", although those aren't always useful in solving this type of problem. In the Console utility look in the left "log list" for FILES > ~/Library/Logs, then for CrashReporter.

I just purchased a new HP Photosmart Premium C410a and was able to use HP Scan successfully a few times. Now every time I try using it on either Mac I installed it on, I get the quit unexpectedly error.

I installed the HP print software from the install disc that came with the printer on:
- mid-2010 MacBook Pro running 10.6.6 (HP Scan worked on this machine the first few times I tried it)
- Windows 7 Enterprise (on a Virtual VMware Fusion machine). The crashing seemed to start after this step, but I'm not positive about that). Scanning works without any issues on this virtual machine.
- late 2008 13" MacBook running 10.6.6

All three machines are running all the current updates to their OS' and I've verified that the HP software is up to date on all three machines.

I've tried rebooting both Macs, uninstalling the HP software and then reinstalling it, repairing disk permissions, and trashing all HP printing preferences, but HP Scan still crashes on open.

As other posters have indicated, I can print without any issues - it's just scanning that's a problem.

Any additional suggestions welcome.

Sorry to jump in here, but i've been having similar problems with my mac.. getting the "program quit unexpectedly"... with every single program installed on my mac... including software update, safari, itunes, pages... Everything apart from finder and applications > Utilities.

I did what you pointed out to the above poster... and found multiple error reports for the various programs.. they look like this.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

You really should have started your own thread in a section specific to your version of OS X.

It may not help, but you might try installing the latest "combo" updater for your OS X version. For OS X 10.6.5 that would be here: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1324

I know i should've probably started my own thread.. but it seems you know what you're talking about so i was hoping you'd have insight in to my problem also.
I'm currently downloading the combo from the provided link, thanks - fingers crossed..
And I guessed the acronym was a friendly greeting, thanks 🙂.
If it doesn't work out though, i'll retract my comment and open my own question similar to what i've posted here? (Not sure on the etiquette on double posting and such on discussion boards..)
Thanks again.

I'd have read your post if you'd put it on a more-appropriate section.

That's what I'd do, adding the additional information about your applying the combo updater.

Updates:
1. also verified the startup (and only) HD on both Macs using disk utility. MacBook had no issues. MacBook Pro needed repairs, which I performed by booting from the OSX disc that shipped with computer.

2. ran the 10.6.6 combo updater on both machines based on other posts to this thread (both machines had previously been updated to 10.6.6 thru software update).

still having same issue with hpscan quitting.

Considering creating new user account next to see if that helps.
