Welcome to Apple Discussions.

There are several steps which could help your situation.

1. Open Disk Utility in the Utilities folder. Select your drive, then click on Repair permissions. There might be quite a long list of errors reported. You don't need to worry about this as long as it finishes with the statement - permissions repaired. This usually takes about 10 mins - a little longer if there are many corrections to make.

Following this restart the computer and shut down. If all goes well you probably have no further need to do anything.

2. If there's still a problem, open Disk Utility again and this time select Verify Disk. If it reports no errors there's no need to go further with this. If there is an error reported you need to insert your original installation disk and restart holding the c-key until the grey screen with the Apple logo appears.

When it gets to 'select your language', do this and click 'continue'. On the next screen there will be a top menu bar. Locate Disk Utility in the Tools menu and this time run Repair disk. When it has completed rerun it to check that no further repairs are needed.

After this Quit DU and quit the installer. The computer will restart. Again check whether your problem has been resolved.

hey , as i posted before the solution worked but now the problem returned , i repaired my system again but the problem keeps coming back . if i turn on my mac and then turn it off without starting any application then it all works ok . If i open applications and start using it then it doesn't shut down . Could it be an application stopping it from shutting down properly ?

Well, it's certainly not a problem with free space. 😉

its only a five months old mac

Ahhh, that might make it a different situation. This forum deals with Original MBPs. As it could be related to specific hardware, I suggest you post in the MBP 2008/Later forum (or we can ask the Hosts to move this whole thread over there, your choice). And, as I'm sure you're aware, you have a one year hardware warranty, so if this doesn't get worked out, you definitely want to take this up with AppleCare. I'm guessing they'll have you do a fresh OS installation at some point, so if going to an Apple Store or trying to do this over the phone is less convenient than doing the install, you may want to go ahead with the install and see if that resolves it.

Hey it is an original mcbook pro i bought it from apple 5 months ago .Anws i tried everything , reinstalling my os , repairing disk permitions and verifying the disk only gives me the message that everything is ok but stil i cannot shut it down. All i get is a blue screen with a circle goin round forever . LIke i said if i turn it on and then str8 off without opening any applications it workds just fine if i start using it then i get the blue screen(when i shut down) . So it means theres an application keeping it on right? Which one though?
PLease help

Open System Profiler and post back with the Model Identifier.

Anws i tried everything , reinstalling my os

Did you erase the HD and just install a fresh OS or reinstall all your apps/data or?

So it means theres an application keeping it on right? Which one though?

Check in Activity Monitor and/or Console. I would also try a Safe Boot.

system profiler gives me this "MacBookPro7,1"
anw i reinstalled my operating system and not the applications.i also tried the repair method . Verifying the disk says everything is ok with my system . I quit all apps and then go on avtivity monitor and it doesn't show any apps running.
So if i run a safe boot where do i go from there?

You reboot and see how things work. If issue persists, see previous paragraph.
