Hi,

I'm new to this, so please forgive me if this is in the wrong forum.

I just got a new PM G5, my husband subscribed to some newsgroups on the old PC, he needed to download a program to use/get the newsgroups. Can anyone tell me how to do this with the MAC? I am extremely limited in my computer knowledge, so please explain at computer-moron level. . .

Thanks,

cobdoc

Hi, cobdoc.

There are a variety of News Readers available for Mac OS X. This is the type of software to which you are referring.

Search MacUpdate or Version Tracker for news reader. This is the fastest way to find solutions. The user-submitted reviews accompanying the listings are helpful in sorting the wheat from the chaff.

Good luck!

I think you are talking about accessing Usenet newsgroups. Some of the common ones for Macs are comp.sys.mac.apps and comp.sys.mac.system.

You can access them via the web using Google Groups , or with a dedicated Usenet program. Most of the Mac Usenet clients can be found listed on Mac Orchard. Two of the more popular freeware applications are Multi-Threaded NewsWatcher (MTNewsWatcher), and Mozilla Thunderbird.

Entourage comes with the Microsoft news group account already set up for you. You will not find any general Mac groups on their server. You would have to create a new News account using the settings provided by your ISP for their own news server. The number of groups available, the completeness of the coverage, and the length of time the messages stay on your ISP's news server is dependent on your ISP. Some do a wonderful job, others hardly have any offerings. With Entourage you can read messages and post messages to the groups.

There is another way to access the news groups. That is through Google Groups. You can read all the messages at Google Groups, but you have to sign up with them if you want to post a message.

You can see a listing of the main Mac groups available by clicking here. Only some of these may be available through your ISP's news server.
