27" Cinema Display Haze/Grease/Smoke

I recently noticed what appears to look like haze/grease/smoke on my 27” Apple Cinema Display when the display is turned off and light happens to fall on the display at the right angle. I’ve tried wiping the display with just a microfiber cloth as well as using iKlear to clean the display (I followed the directions strictly specifically by cleaning the display when it was turned off and has cooled down).

Despite all my efforts, I just can’t seem to clean off this grease. It almost seems like the problem lies on the inside of the display, however I just can’t imagine how this may have occurred given that I just recently purchased this display.

Has anyone else experienced this problem? I would really appreciate any input on what could be done to remedy this problem.

I had a similar problem at the lower edge of the screen, about 2 cm high and 30 cm long. I took the display back to the retailer and they changed the panel under guarantee. You can see the hazy area best by using the free utility PixelCheck (http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/10793/pixel-check) and turning the whole screen into white.

To all. This is an old problem that I thought had gone away.

If your display came packaged in a stiff cloth bag without a thin plastic film covering the whole screen your display is most likely scratched. You can verify this if you still have the packaging. The styrofoam corners and supports rubbed on the stiff bag abrading the surface. Those who have distinct lines about 2 inches from the top of the display you will notice they match the inside molding of the top styrofoam block. You will most likely also see similar abrading in the bottom right and left corners. These match the bottom support blocks.

Original 24 and 27 inch displays did not have a plastic film covering the entire screen (only the apple logo). A running change was made on newer screens to include a protective film. Unfortunately there is no solution except to replace the screen. Cleaning with any product is only temporary as the abrasions are only masked until the cleaner dissipates.

The screen is made from arsenic free glass. It is sold under the brand name Gorilla Glass from Corning. It is stronger than acrylic but not as durable (scratch resistant) as regular glass.

So I returned my dell 30" because it had display port issues that went to sleep and never woke up, dell offered no response to thousands of angry people who shelled out $1300. so returned the dell, bought the apple 27 and i could have died when I read this....i JUST BOUGHT the apple 2011 27" cinema display and had the same greese out of the box issue was now my private ****. I tried just about everything to clean the screen, nothing worked. Within days of not being able to return my apple 27" I found the following product from microcenter.

it needs to be applied in 2 steps and in small areas, (divide the lcd in 3 or more areas)

1. wipe with the wet towel the entire screen (next on to step 2, dont wait to long 2-5 minsis ok, still semi wet)

2. small circle rubs with included cloth, slow but steady,you will gring as it clears up and stays clear, if you go to fast it fogs over again, slow and steady win the race!

Hope that helps, this was a huge investment technology wise, and i know you guys love this lcd as much as I do, even with the glare.This is me thanking all the apple community as a new 1 year convert reading all the forums. this display is connected to my mac mini server and helps me make music,I got tired of crappy dell pc's on pro tools, no regrets.
