iPad Nook and IBooks incompatible

I am unable to download to my iPad nook books that I purchased. iBooks tries to open the books. I called Barnes and Noble tech support and was told that there was a problem between iBooks and Nook. iBooks grabs the file and tries to open it first. The only solution available, per B&N tech support person, was to delete iBooks. Not a viable answer. I should be able to have multiple ereaders on my iPad. Are others having this problem and if so, is there another solution other than being stuck with one ereader?

This isn't a problem at all, it's merely how the system works. When you're reading Amazon books they want you on their reader, Barnes & Noble feels the same way, as does Borders, as does Apple. Not only are you allowed to have multiple readers on your iPad, you're required to if you're buying from those sources ... not to even mention the free readers with their own apps and catalogues.

What you're describing is not what happens on a normal purchase and, had I been sold a load of garbage like you were by whoever you were on the horn with, it would be immediate rockets to his supervisor. I hope that what he told you was pure BS. Your solution is to talk to B&N again and, if needed, escalate it.

Try to get another bite at the apple, another try at a download. Just to be on the safe side, run a 'hard reset' first (press/hold both Home and Sleep/Wake for 10 secs until Apple logo, then release and let boot complete) before trying the next purchase and download. If it still happens after that you'll have to start out by suspecting either your install of the Nook app or, perhaps, that file itself.

So, as a test, I just bought a book on Nook (just a 99¢ special but one that I'll like reading, I think) and it worked as expected. Open the app, tap Shop, find the book, order, confirm the CC info, and it was done. A minute or so later it popped up on the Nook library display, marked as 'Lendable', and right after that it was being read. The introduction, at least.

I was having the same problem. My nook app was not syncing my library and when I tried to download the book the ibook app wanted to open it and then would get an error. I tried the reboot that didn't help. I just deleted ibook app from my ipad and reran the nook app and it works fine now. Seems like ibook really doesn't work well with the nook app. Hope this might help.

It's a mess and the Nook app for iPad was just updated yesterday. From now on, if a book isn't available in iBook, shop Amazon. Their Kindle app works great on an iPad and in my experience, they are usually less expensive. Probably why Barnes and Noble is in financial trouble. All that said, doing a hard re-start of the iPad should fix the problem with the Nook app. It reboots the app and downloads the purchase.

Actually its Borders that filed for reorganization (and their reader is a peice of crap).

I've been using both the Apple iBook and B&N's reader (now Nook) together since it was first released (as well as a number of other readers). Never expereinced what you are describing.

One thing I would suggest is that when downloading through Nook, make sure iBooks is closed. Would also agree that Kindle is a viable option, and a better peice of software.

The tech that helped you at B&N was either an idiot, or a tool. A comment like that would have sent me into total curmudgeon mode. I seem to remember a similar report on another thread. B&N may be losing some of my business.

A hard reboot works but there is an even easier way. Double click the Home button - bottom of the screen when held in horizontal mode, right above the sync/recharge socket - which will open a narrow window at the bottom of the screen which can be scrolled left/right. This window shows, amongst other things, all the running programmes. Find the icon for the Nook app and press for a couple of seconds. The programme icons will start to vibrate and a red Delete button appears on the top left of the icons. Touch the Delete button and the Nook icon will disappear - which means that the Nook app has closed (this is actually what you are achieving by doing a hard reboot). Now click the Home button twice again and you will be in the Home screen. Open the Nook app and it will sync with the B&N servers - this obviously only works if you have a wifi or 3G connection - and your new B&N ebook purchases will show up on your Nook app.

I use both iBooks and Nook.

For Nook you purchase the books at Barnes and Noble web site under your account name. Open Nook and login (it remembers for later) and the Nook app will synch the library. You don't "download" the books yourself, the app does it for you. If you try to manually download a B&N epub book it will be encoded so that only the Nook app can read it.

For iBooks you purchase the books in iTunes or the Store within iBooks. I also grad public free ePub books and drag/drop them to iTunes. They get synched the next time I synch my iPad.

This all works well.

However, I just now discovered that "Nook from B&N" app changed its name to "Nook by B&N" and so I had two versions on my iPad. I ended up deleting the older version and re-synching to clean up.
