Dock Connector Error - No Sound

I've upgraded the OS 4.2 and everything worked fine. A week ago, I started getting the "Dock Connector" message in iPad where the volume control should be. If I plug in a headphone, the volume control returns and I hear everything in the headphone. Pull it out the and "Dock Connector" message reappears and no sound.

I spent time with an Apple support tech and we reset it back to factory. The keyboard clicked like normal. After the software restore, the same symptoms reappeared. All software is from the iTunes Apps store.

The orientation lock has no effect. The volume slider opposite the orientation lock is missing unless a headphone is plugged in. The mute switch shows changing status on the screen. I've inserted and pulled the USB dock connector about fifty times and even given the unit a healthy slap.

The odd thing is that I'll occasionally get a charging or unlock sound, but with no repeatability.

Spot on! Sometimes (well most times really)the DIY is all you need and as simple as it seems is as simple as a solution it should be. My screen was cracked so of course moisten little pockets can be an issue even though I protect it (company phone, need to wait for my free upgrade coming soon) good ol vaccum cleaner definitely dried it out! Works better! Thank you for giving us the good ol DYI home remady

I have also the same exact situation that you describe. Even with the occasional charging or unlock sound but with no repeatability. Verynweird, I've done restores but While it makes all the sounds while resetting the device, it eventually goes back to the dock connector error after installing apps.

Thanks for any hints on how to correct this.

Best,
Pedro

I have solved this problem. It's a weird solution but it worked both on my iPad (1) and on someone else's who read my solution on my blog.

It seems there is a tiny bit of moisture building up near the connector in the iPad, which short-circuits the connector port and makes the iPad think it's conected to a dock. You don't have to submerge your iPad for this.

I think it can be good old-fashiond perspiration. Most of us rest the iPad with its connector on our laps when using it, and I think this can cause the problem.

The safest solution to this is use a common vacuumcleaner and suck the connector port for about a minute.

The sucking of air dries the inside, resolves the short-circuit and restores sound.

The 'dock connect' message will disappear, the day is saved.

I guess it could also be cleared with a blowdryer, but I'd rather not subject the iPad to heat, and also blowing might introduce dust into the iPad. It seems sucking is the way to go.

I have tested everything, It won't work for me. It started 2 days ago, it's driving me crazy.

Bluetooth and regular headphones work fine.

Use a hair dryer, vaccumm cleaner, nothing.

my issue is that internal stuff (like Settings, Sounds) will play. sometime when connecting to computer will do a "blip"sound, but nothing more.

So it is not a hardware issue.

It is no the lock rotation and mute issue either.

Any thoughts?

Mine is iPad2 32 Wifi, iOS 4.3.3.

Update: Oh, when I first turn it on, I get the unlock screen sound, and if I'm quick enought, I can run ipod and it will play the song. After a few seconds, volume will go down, volume bar will go off, Conector Dock appears.

Ok thanks for that ... I can tell you this will work, I combined the vac cleaner on the charger port with a little simple mouth blowing into the port and that brought the vol slide icon back clear you mouth when doing this

as it might not be great to blow spit into if your trying to dry it! but thats what did it for me.

I´ve tried this for quite a good time.. nothing solved it.

I´ll try the vac cleaner again, hair blower, voodo or whatever it takes...

Anyway, I can hear sound when I turn it on and when unlocking the device (password protected screen).

After that, if I´m quick enough, I can see the volume bar when double clicking the home button and sliding right. But it will go away a couple of seconds later...
