Unable to drag files to Desktop …..

….. nor open the Desktop in Finder. Error message shows as 'There is no application set to open the document “Desktop”. Then asks me to choose an application to open Desktop.
Using Snow Leopard upgrade.
Appreciate any ideas how to fix this annoyance.

iMac, Mac OS X (10.6.6)

Your Desktop folder has become corrupt. Under Finder's Go menu, select Home. Find Desktop and trash it. Then File -> New Folder, and re-create the Desktop folder. log out and log back in.
