how to clean the dust inside the g5?

I asked the tech at my local Apple Dealer and he said just spray it out with a can of compressed air. I asked if there was any special instructions and he said "no, just spray it out".

I'm not sure what type of connection the new graphics card uses. The new G5's don't use AGP for graphics anymore, they use PCI-Express so you'll just have to make sure the card uses AGP to work with your G5.

I use one of the compressed air cans, observing static precautions. Be sure to hold the can well away from any electronic parts, as the spray will freeze.

I also keep a big domestic fan blowing to make sure the dislodged dust settles somewhere else.

Some users swear by the leaf-blower in the garage.


Keeping the G5 off the floor seems to cut the dust build-up a bit.

I recently installed a new 16x dvd burner in my G5, which is 1 1/2 years old. I had never cleaned it before so I expected it to be loaded with dust. To my surprise, there wasn't much dust at all....and it sits on the floor. I just used a can of compressed air on the fans and logic board and a cloth on the plastic.

oddly enough i was coming on this forum to post a topic asking the same thing.

i have a can thats called 'dust-off' and it says its a 'compressed-gas duster'

is this the same as compressed air?

is it safe to use?

Check the directions on the back... also check the contents. Normally anything like that will inform you of contaminants harmful to delicate electrical devices.

If its just compressed air make sure you keep the can well back from the source.. and unplug the G5 (take it somewhere you don't mind dust.. there no point doing this in situe, just for it to suck it back in again!)

Also.. as mentioned.. keep the can upright (as the air is decompressed the can gets very cold)
