Verizon Mi Fi Fivespot - problems?

Recent purchase of Verizon Fivespot (Mi Fi modem) to use with iPad and ITouch has been a disaster.
Very difficult setup procedure. Once connection to iPad is made, the unit will not deliver a Wi Fi signal -
so you cannot access the web.
Verizon denies that there is any technical/software problem. The warranty runs out (30-60 days) and user/client is stuck with a malfunctioning unit. Meanwhile, Verizon continues to charge ongoing data fees. Have searched the web and other users have had similar problems but no remedies are forthcoming. Hope that similar problems do not arise with new Apple/Verizon iPad-3G.

Have iPad users had similar difficulties with FiveSpot? Any solutions?

Hello, Make connection through WI Fi Settings on iPad and see that connection has been verified - but no Wi Fi signal appears to allow access to web. Have tried re-installation of software in setup computer (iMac) with Verizon application. Will not work with either iPad or iTouch. Unable to try USB cable connection between iPad and FiveSpot.
Selected FiveSpot because we needed global access.
Thanks for your reply.

I regularly use a Five Spot with my iPad with no issues. The Five Spot was set up on a computer the first time which was easy enough. All I had to do to access it from the iPad was turn on WiFi and enter the password.

How can you be making a connection to the iPad without a WiFi signal?

You have a one year warranty on the device, by the way.

The warranty is one year, regardless of the length of your contract. It is provided by the manufacturer.

Have you reset your iPad? Tried deleting the Network settings and trying again? Tried restoring it? However, if it won't connect to either of your devices, the device itself may well be defective. Take it to your nearest VZW Store. They should have a live Five Spot as well iPads and Samsung Galaxy Tabs. Take your iPad with you. Test it with their Five Spot. Have then test yours with their devices.

Good ideas. I will try that approach, assuming that I can get VZW to cooperate.
You were correct in your previous observation, that there had to be a WiFi signal to get an initial connection to the iPad. However, there is no WiFi network signal thereafter. Obviously, all of the usual reset maneuvers were tried. Software was reinstalled, etc. We spent days (weeks) trying to get this thing online, to no avail.
Thanks again for your help.

Many of us have decided that the Fivespot is a piece of crap. I've had a Verizon MiFi for over a year with no problems, but have have two Fivespots stop providing wi-fi (to iPad, iPhone, PC, etc.). First one died in a week, second one died in 1 day. Our company's tech can't figure it out, Verizon can't solve it. Lots of people have had this issue... listen to all the pain in this Verizon thread:

I just experienced a similar problem when trying to connect my MacBook Pro via a Fivespot that my mother has not been able to get working as a hotspot since Oct. Works fine when connected via USB but not wireless. You can connect to the device, but the device will not connect to the network.

The issue turned out to be a config problem in the Fivespot settings. Go to http://192.168.0.1 (assuming you haven't changed this) and on the WAN SETTINGS tab and make sure the NETWORK SELECT is set to GLOBAL. Then got to the WAN CONNECTION MODE tab and make sure you have the corresponding AUTOCONNECT (GLOBAL/ACCESS MODE) selected. In my case, one was set to global and the other was not.
