New York Times app won't refresh

I have had ever-worsening problems running the NY Times app. since updating my ipad's operating system, At first, no photos or slide shows would load (except photos included on a section "front page"). Instead of loading, the little "wheel" just spins continuously.

Now even the news stories don't update, and the date shown at the top of the app is the date I downloaded the app... which I now must do again each day just to get the news to update. Otherwise, the date doesn't ever change, and I am stuck reading yesterday's news. Also, only one or two sections will load at all... "Top News" and "Most Emailed" will load when I download the app, but no other sections are listed...

WiFi strength shows as strong and other apps work ok. I had previously had problems with the app "timing out" and wouldn't reload news unless it was closed and reopened. Now it must be downloaded again to reload! This is Times app version 2.0.4 and Ipad version 4.2.1 (8C148). Any help appreciated.

No promises but a system Reset cures many ills and takes but a minute to perform:
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until you see the Apple logo. Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.

A Reset does NOT delete apps, photos, movies, music or any other data. A Reset does NOT delete any settings for email, network access, etc.

Also, you might wish to download the 4.2 User Guide. Pay special attention to page 170.

When the NY Times App was 1st introduced it was a free App. It has since gone to a free "Subscription required" app. It will only fully update if you are signed in to your account and connected to Wi-Fi (or 3g?) when you attempt to update.

In order to update you have to touch the "sections" box in the lower left hand corner. When that opens, you will see a list of all the topics (approx 30). The little blue dots to the left of the topic indicate "Registration Required" topics that will not update unless you are signed in. I believe there is only the "Top News" topic that is still free. All the rest will not update unless you are logged in.

With that window open, touch the "Update All" box at the bottom (in the window). You will see checkmarks appear at the right of each topic as it updates. Then you will see "Updated: 02/03/11 1:02 PM" (or whenever you last updated).

Also, on the top left of the screen, next to the "The New York Times" headline, you will see a "Last Update: " followed by red print with date and time. That is when the articles were last updated, not when you last synced so that may not change for a couple of syncs.

I suspect you are not signed in to your account. If not, click on "Settings" (Lower right corner on the same bottom tool bar as "Sections")and the Log In form will pop up.

Hope this helps and your issue is not something else!

There is definitely a bug (or more) with this app.
I have same problem. I'm signend up and much of the time (80%) it works fine. But sometimes you try to update the content and it doesn't; yesterday's news, etc is still there, even though the date at the top of the screen is current.
Somemtimes this is solved by logging out and logging back in again. Sometimes it requires closing the app and doing a hard poweroff (hold down home button).
Only after restarting the iPad and the app will the content update.

NY Times REALLY needs to fix this before they start charging for access.

Thanks for the replies.
The app is working better since:

1. As one poster suggested, I had not 'signed in' when I re-installed the app...and that's why only one or two "sections" were loading.

2. Restarting the ipad (holding down buttons to display apple icon) seems to have got the app working except

3. the wifi connection still 'times out' after 15 minutes or so if nothing new is downloaded...the signal strength icon disappears and I get 'no internet connection'. The connection resets if the app is re-started. (This happens on the Washington Post app also.) Can anyone explain why this happens (or how to prevent it?) Is this something the ipad is 'supposed' to do? Is it the ipad or perhaps my router that drops the connection?

I have exactly the same problem. I am a registered nyt user. My ipad is up to date. But when i start kthe nyt app, i get yesterdays news. When i click on sections and Update All, i get a spinning ball that spins forever. Resetting the ipad does usually work, but what a bother.

The app support page says it is possible to use the app in airllne mode -- i have a hunch the app on my ipad is stuck in airline mode, though my wireless is on and signal is strong. Help.

Happens to me on an iPhone now with the updated 3.0 version. Note I am logged in. At startup, it now claims "No internet connection", and it works in offline mode. But there is no question that I do have an internet connection --- all my other apps access the internet just fine. I have tried restarting the app, as well as resetting the iPhone itself.
