Getting logged off automatically after I connect external monitor and login

I have a sweet setup. I travel with my maxed out 13" Air and when I get to my home office I drop my Air into a Book Arc stand, jack in my 27" Apple Display MDP, USB, and power cord and enjoy OS/X in all its glory augmented only with an Apple BT Keyboard and Magic Trackpad (plus gobs of USB devices).

Twice in the last month when I jacked in and then logged in, I instantly get logged off. All my open applications that were happily suspended are killed instantly (not closed). I just lost 2 hours of work last night and had to wake up at 5:30AM to redo it (the 2nd attempt was actually better 🙂.

I should have typed "uptime" to determine if it was a reboot vs. instant log off. The login screen was the same I see after a resume from suspend, not the standard login from a new reboot. I suspect there was no reboot.

The only correlation I can make in both instances is that the battery was in the red and my machine may have been in deep sleep mode.

Any ideas? Thanks.

This has been happening to me a lot lately! Both on my iMac and MacBook Pro (both bought in 2011).

The machines have been connected to a power source everytime this has happened. As a result I have lost work because of it. The system just kills everything instantly, with no chance of defending against it.

Whenever I experience this I get the regular login screen and some of my apps, which I have set load on startup, just won't start at all.

Anybody out there, please please HELP!!!!!!!
