Burning AVI to DVD

I posted this a while back, but it never got much responce.

I have an AVI movie and i want to burn it to DVD to watch in a normal DVD player. Whats the best way to do this using Roxio's Toast?

Use Quicktime Pro to export to DV, import it to iMovie, export it to iDVD.
Note an hour of DV video will take up about 12 GB.

Just open Toast choose Video. Choose DVD Video as format. and hit the record button.

That's all there is to it

Toast will do direct AVI to DVD transfer? Which version?

Whataya got?

I'm using 7.01 now but I'm pretty sure 6 worked. There was some problem when I first upgraded to Tiger but I guess the updates took care of it.

That's good to know. I have version 6.1.1, though thought a data format conversion would be necessary, as EyeTV 1.8.3 needs to convert the raw MPEG-2 files of my EyeTV 200 to MPEG-2 muxed before Toast will accept the MPEG-2 files. AVI files though are pretty big too. Will Toast simply burn them at size?

I never thought of .avi files as being big. one hour TV shows are eithe 350meg or 700meg .

How big Toast makes them depends on what you ask it to do.

A Super video CD is larger than a Video CD for example.

When I need to convert things I use ffmpegx but toast will convert and burn .avi files on it's own

Ive tried using Toast in the past (using Jeffs first method) and one hour after i hit the record button, it was still encoding the video.

How long will it take in iDVD from DV? And can iDVD not burn AVI if you drag the AVI to the 'play content when disc inserted' button?

Theres no real rush, its just i never expected buring a 700MB AVI file to be this slow, when a 4.4GB VOB takes around 30 minutes.

I'm not an expert on this but....

I think you're comparing the time it takes to burn a DVD with the time it takes to encode content for a DVD and then burn it.

Like it only takes 20 minutes to bake bread but it does take longer to get the dough ready for baking.

Hey, i used a similar analogie today when explaining why a Front Side Bus is important. And yes, i actually just realised why its taking so long. Of course, the AVI has to be encoded. I forgot all about that.
