Abroad text charges

I'm in Mexico,have data roaming off,cellular network off, fetch off, everything off except airplane mode so I can still wifi. Recording texts--do I get charged for this ifni don't have an international plan? If so can I shut off texting and still use wifi? Thanks

If you have cellular data off, you should not be receiving texts. Texts are sent over the carrier network.

Just turned my phone off airplane mode and My cellular data is off. Started receiving texts right away. .???

You can send/receive texts with Cellular Data off. The only way to shut off texting is to turn on Airplane Mode. You can turn Airplane Mode On and then turn wifi back On, while still leaving Airplane mode On.

I thought the same until I tried it (send and receive).

As for whether you will get charged, you will need to ask your carrier.

You CAN receive texts with cellular data off. Text messaging was implemented long before the current data networks were put in place.

The current networks were in place before texting. CDMA and GSM date back to the late 80s. Texting didn't come around until the late 90s.

Thanks for the help. Turned wifi on with airplane mode on. Texts do come in with airplane mode off and cellular data off too. So I will call AT&T when I get home to check on charges. Thanks for all the great replies. That was my first post attempt. Your great

SMS was developed in 1984 and implemented in 1985,

GSM does predate it.

Cell phones, GSM radio phones, etc. Primarily used in-house on devices when first unleashed upon the world. But the standards for SMS go all the way back to then.
