Q: Multiple chime on startup

Hi. I have looked around and not found this precise issue: When I start my MacBook, some of the time it is fine, but on occasion I get a sort of double chime -- the chime seems to skip or hiccup in the middle. Then the computer starts normally.

Now, just today, it hiccuped twice for the first time.

I had my PRAM reset just a few weeks ago due to other issues, but this did not change this situation: it still happens about as often -- about one in three or four startups, I'd guess. I suppose I should test this and give a more exact figure.

Finally I should mention I have a brand new hard drive, as mine fried some weeks back, and a new upgrade from 10.4. I was having various problems then and can't recall if this was one of them. Let's assume it is a more recent problem: Any thoughts?

MacBook 2.16 GHz Intel Core Duo etc etc, Mac OS X (10.6.6)

It's the same person again, a year older and not much wiser.

Resetting the PRAM solved this problem last time, but it is now happening again and two resets have not get it back to one chime. I should add I am having great perrformance problems: The thing is just slower and slower; I am hopeful all this is not related. Or maybe I should hope it is so one thing fixes all.

Anyway, if anyone else has a suggestion beyond the above (and also see the other discussion at https://discussions.apple.com/message/15691114#15691114 ), please send them along!

Have you tried running Apple Hardware Test to check you ram and other stuff?

Run Rember for some other ram checks.

    Also note the following:

Power On Self-Test Beep Definition - Part 2

Based on that a double boot chime might be an indication of "incompatible RAM types".  So are you mixing different brands of ram?

FWIW, it wouldn't hurt to do a smc reset when you go to do the pram reset since you need to shut down anyhow prior to these resets.
