disks shooting out super fast

Hello, I was hoping maybe someone encountered the same problem as me. I have an imac G5 with the super drive and when I eject disks they shoot out. They used to just pop out and hang there but now they litterally shoot out. I am on my second logic board in about 10 months. wondering if this could have anthing to do with it? Thanks in advance for any word of adice or what it sould be?

It's not the midplane since they do not replace the SuperDrive unless it is a problem too.

I have had the same thing happen to my iMac and I jsut chalked it up to the cover loosening up and not holding the disk there when it is ejected.

Hi. I've had exactly the same problem. In the past when a dvd or cd ejected it gracefully slid two-thirds of the way out and just waited for me to remove it. Now it launches out the slot, bounces on the desk and flies onto the floor. Not good! Don't suppose it could be a bug / error in an update? Whatever the reason it really shouldn't happen. By the way - I've not had any changes to my Mac since I bought it (Rev B).

Ok, looks like I've fixed it!

I opened the iMac, removed the optical drive, then re-inserted it making sure the IDE connector was pressed in tightly.

Since booting up again, my drive is now listed under ATA in System Profiler (it wasn't after it stopped working). I have imported 5 music CDs so far, mounted DVDs, CD-RWs and DVD-Rs and none been thrown across the room as before.

I can only assume that the reported excessive internal heat of the iMac G5 has caused the IDE connector to buckle in some subltle way and interfere with the IDE pin alignments.

Now all seems fine. Bizarre!

There are instructions from Apple on how to reseat your optical drive below:

Does this work for anyone else?

Mine still launches disks. At first it really didn't bother me but it is starting to more and more considering that Apple is known for their great design, this seems to be an obvious flaw. I guess it is kind of nice to know that I am not alone though. I have about 1 full month left on my warranty and I plan on getting apple care in the next few weeks considering the problems I have had so far. Still beats a PC any day of the week!!

There is a separate discussion on this topic elsewhere on this page.

The only known "cure" for this problem is to have the bezel replaced (the plastic housing for the computer). As part of this new bezel there will be better materials around the drive opening which slows down the disk and stops it perfectly.

I had mine replaced a couple of months ago and it still works great. If you have AppleCare, you can even have them come out to your home/office and do it there. That's what I did and it was very convenient. The AppleCare rep was familiar with the problem and did not question my need for the bezel.

Good luck.
