Blue screen: is it fried?

G5 never fully recovered from a kernel panic created after trying to connect a projector while it was on "Sleep Mode". I probably should have turned it off first right?

After formatting/reinstalling Tiger 10.4 twice (i didnt update to 10.4.9 yet), and deconnected everything but mouse/keyboard/main HD, i have no problem Safe Booting, but regular start up will stop at that notorious BLUE SCREEN.

Info:
- I mainly use this computer for Protools 7.4.
- "No audio device found" for output or input.
- both monitor outputs seem to work.
- i cannot even open an online video.

- Disk Warrior finds no software nor hardware problem
- I tried most of the main solutions found online and in Ted Landau's Help Line book, but to no avail.

Questions:
- Did I fry my graphic/video card (NVidea GeForce FX5200 Ultra)? Or something else?
- Is there any way to check hardware without bringing this to an actual -and costly- Apple repairshop?

Thanks for sharing experience here, i was in the middle of scoring a film - was thinking of using 2 monitors for Protools windows and the projector for the movie - this bug is threatening my meeting the deadline!

Hi lehublot, and a warm welcome to the forums! 🙂

Bad video card could be it, it's definitely one thing that may boot in Safe Mode, & not in regular mode when Quartz kicks in.

Have you checked the system log using Console in Utilities?

Logs should be Date/Time stamped if you can narrow it down the the time of the last blue screen.

Hi BDAqua, thanks for warm welcome and prompt answer!

Excuse my ignorance, i m not sure how to check the system log, but just went to console and it says that so far:

"Mac OS X Version 10.4 (assemblage 8A428)
2011-02-04 06:08:55 -0500
2011-02-04 06:08:56.068 SystemUIServer[140] lang is:fr
Feb 4 14:18:53 power-mac-g5-de-v-t mDNSResponder: Repeated transitions for interface en0 (192.168.0.199); delaying packets by 5 seconds"

Would this happen to talk to you at all?

Not enough there, unless maybe you're connecting via Airport? That's another thing disabled in Safe Mode on 10.4.x

Say try starting it in regular mode at Feb 4 19:00:00, then note the time of the blue screen, reboot in Safe Mode, check System log for Feb 4 19:00:00 to Feb 4 time of the blue screen.

Between those should be our clues.

I tried again, had the blue screen at 23;40
This time i let that blue screen on longer, like 15mn.
Up to the point where the fan went into some sort of "hyper-ventilation".

Then i turned it off (via the power button), turned it back on via safe boot.
Here s what the console says:

Mac OS X Version 10.4 (assemblage 8A428)
2011-02-04 23:56:21 -0500
2011-02-04 23:56:22.454 SystemUIServer[141] lang is:fr

We re far from the 20-100 lines here.
But it doesnt seem to register the "blue crash" at 23.40 at all, right?

Very good point: this was the console.log

Here s the system.log, way more talkative it seems:

The 23;33 lines are from the blue screen period
The 23;55 lines are from the safeboot period

If this is not clear, i m going to redo the whole thing again now that i know where to get the info (system.log)

In the meantime, i ll unplug the optical drive - i guess i should do that with the G5 turned off rigth?

Will be back in a few..
