Q: New Thread -- Genius is Unavailable for the Song ... (New songs bought ITS)

Hello,
I am on iTunes 10.1.2(17). I have noticed for at least a couple months now that when I buy new songs from iTunes Music Store and try to get a genius list from them, I get the message "Genius is Not available for the song..." I have looked at all earlier posts, tried checking and unchecking all songs, and all previous fixes, but nothing works.

This is nothing off the beaten tracks. Top 20 hits. Example "Hold My Hand" Michael Jackson and Akon, and "Forget You" Cee Lo Green. So it strikes me that there should be lots of data to make Genius playlists. It seems to me that songs that are newly released are the ones having issues.

Any suggestions?

"If I buy a new song (e.g., Carly Rae Jepsen - Call Me Maybe) Genius data is unavailable, but if I buy an older song that released 18 months ago it works fine.

Have sent an iTunes support request. Will see what they say."

Plus it isnt like apple could say they dont have a lot of people with these songs on playlists.

OKay, so iTunes support apologized that I'm "having problems downloading songs" and sent me instructions on how to redownload songs. — Huh?!?

So I sent another reply saying they must have misread my message and it's Genius that isn't working. Then they told me to read troubleshooting (which has no help for Genius), then they directed me back here to these forums.

Apple support used to be great... I'm starting to question it now. I might try in an Apple store.

I got in touch with a really good AppleCare person, Majella, in May last year, and she got in touch with engineers, and I think that is what ended up fixing it.  Howver, it seems nothing has happened since then, and I don't have any songs released since May 2011 that will create a Genius playlist, including very popular songs like Gotye - Somebody that I Used to Know, and Lana Del Rey - Video Games.

I've emailed Majella again to see if she can contact the same people.  It would be great if they updated Genius more regularly.

I think the point Ian is clearly making is that RECENTLY RELEASED songs don't work as well. I think you are getting RECENTLY RELEASED mixed up with RECENTLY PURCHASED. Ian Parkinson wrote "If songs are new then they will not be in many playlists yet or not have been played as much as older tracks" He then said that the recent songs he purchased worked. You chose to abnoxiuosly list these songs with older dates eventhough the older dates prove his point.

I just updated my Genius and it works with new 2012 songs! Looks like Apple finally improved on Genius.

It's not just new songs people. Soundgarden's Blow Up The Outside World is 16 years old. Bought and downloaded via iPhone(from iCloud, even). Having to connect the phone to iTunes to update Genius is a ridiculous solution(if that even works). Why can't the iPhone fetch Genius data from the cloud? I've downloaded the song itself from the cloud, for crying out loud... that playlist data can't be more than a few hundred KBs.

On another note, how is it that Apple doesn't have a mobile version of their support page? I can barely see the letters on these pages and I am browsing Apple's page on an Apple phone. Anyone else feel the irony?

I suggest that if iTunes users all sent feedback to Apple like I have done, to the effect that theyI will not be buying any more music from iTiunes store until  Genius is properly sorted out.

So here's the thing... I always sync my iTunes playlists with my iPhone. For some reason, there are certain songs I can select to form genius playlists on my phone, but if i access them through iTunes to expand them (i.e. 100 songs instead of 25) i get that "genius is unavailable for this song" message. Clearly it isn't, so could what you're experiencing be some sort of coding error with the actual audio files as opposed to with genius its self?. I've read that iTunes can't handle audio files with non-alphanumeric id tags, but have yet to check mine out. Just thought that might be something you'd want to look into, seeing as everyone on here seems to have a different idea of how Apple operates.
