M-Audio 49 using Garageband Prob

I just bought a new M-Audio 49 Keyboard Controller for my MacBook running OS X 10.6.6. Using Garageband 11 I hear sounds from the keyboard, but the controls don't work. The documentations says they should map out automatically (no extra drivers needed) with Garageband, although the doc's don't specifically mention Garageband 11. I returned the first controller, thinking it was a device error, but now I suspect either Garageband 11, or that I'm a complete idiot in setting it up. Has anyone had success with this combination?

Unfortunately Directlink only supports GB 08 & 09 on the new Gen Oxygens and only GB 09 on the 2nd Gen Axioms. If you have an Axiom Pro then GB is not supported at all with Hypercontrol.

Sorry, I should have said I have an Oxygen 49. So since it isn't supported in Garageband 11, it sounds like my controller will never run under the Garageband version I have, is that right?

Yes, currently it won't run, however M-Audio could update the drivers to include GB11 at a later stage, as the Oxygen already supports 08 & 09. Don't hold your breath though, they are NOTORIOUSLY SLOOOOOOOOOOW at updating drivers. I am not aware of any current non tablet MIDI controllers for GB11.

Thanks for the clarification. I wasn't sure if it was my OS, app or device that at fault. You're telling me it is the Garageband 11 application. So now I can decide to 1) Return the keyboard controller, 2) Wait for Garageband 11 to update their support or 3) Go out and buy another DAW that supports my keyboard controller. Thanks for resolving this for me.

It all depends on what you want to achieve and how you want to interact with the computer in order to make music. Personally I would advise hanging onto it. A lot of folks I know bounce between two or three DAWs or software programs. A controller keyboard can come in real handy as you go through the process of building your 'studio' and personalizing your creative work flow. With respect to GB 11, if you have an iPad, there is an app that has good levels of control over GB's UI when it comes to faders and knobs, transport controls and some effects etc. That might do in the mean time. They Oxygen can still be used to play various software instruments. All the best.

I found that with DirectLink 1.0.3 and the recently-released GarageBand 6.0.2 everything seems to be working fine. The key is to have your Oxygen 49 on preset 10, as the DirectLink readme file instructs. I've posted the content of the file below for reference.

*Oxygen DirectLink for GarageBand and Logic Readme*

+DirectLink is compatible with GarageBand '08 (v4.1.2) and Logic 8.0.2 upwards+

+Getting Started+
+1. Connect your Oxygen keyboard, turn the power on and run Garageband. The software will recognise your Oxygen keyboard automatically.+
+2. Select Preset 10 on your Oxygen Keyboard to access the DirectLink support.+

+Please review Section 7 of the User Guide (Section 5 for Oxygen 88 users) for a description of the controls available through DirectLink in Logic.+

+The GarageBand controls are described below:+

+Track Selection - Track selection is achieved on the Oxygen using the 8 buttons below the Sliders. If there are more than 8 tracks in your song, then you can use the Track Down/Up Buttons to select the previous or next bank of 8 tracks.+

+There are no Track select Buttons on the Oxygen 25. Therefore, the Track Down/Up buttons select the previous or next track in your song.+

+Controlling Track Volumes - The 8 Sliders on the Oxygen control the Volume of Tracks 1-8 respectively. If there are more than 8 tracks in your song, then you can use the Track Down/Up Buttons to select the previous or next bank of 8 tracks.+

+The Volume of the selected track is always controlled by Knob 1 on the Oxygen 25, since the 8 Track Sliders do not exist.+

+Mute Tracks - Hold down the button below the 9th Slider and press one of the 8 Track Select Buttons. This will mute the respective track. No controls are available for track muting on the Oxygen 25.+

+Master Volume - The slider on the Oxygen 25 or the 9th Slider on the other models will control the Master Volume of GarageBand.+

+Parameters in the selected Track - The 8 knobs of the Oxygen keyboard map to various parameters in the selected track as follows:+

+Knob 1 = Volume (Oxygen 25 only)+
+Knob 2 = Pan+
+Knob 3 = Send 1 (most commonly “Echo”)+
+Knob 4 = Send 2 (most commonly “reverb”)+
+Knob 5 = Low EQ Freq+
+Knob 6 = Low EQ Gain+
+Knob 7 = Hi EQ Freq+
+Knob 8 = Hi EQ Gain+

+To see all of the parameters within the selected track, expand ‘details’ in the ‘Track info’ pane on the right-hand side of the GarageBand window. To hear the effects of the knobs, you need to enable “Visual EQ” and the 2 sends effects below (most commonly Echo and reverb).+

This is good news. Thanks for the heads up. Hopefully someone can test the latest Axiom as well and report back. Interesting that M-Audion have not updated their website regarding DirectLink and GarageBand 11 support.

Hi Guys. Not sure if you're still having the issue or not. The manual states that you have to install a driver (not to use the keys to play music) for THE DirectLink software.

http://www.m-audio.com/index.php?do=support&tab=driver&smart_search=directlink#s earchresults

I just downloaded it and installed it. My setup is as follows:

OS X 10.8.3

GarageBand '11 -or- v6.0.5 (428.5)

M-Audio Oxygen 49 (blue - very dark albeit)

The one I downloaded was released 1-27-2012. DirectLink v 1.0.6 for Logic9 and GarageBand 5. <-- FIVE but still working for me. It's a REALLY small download. Close out GarageBand (just to be safe - whatever) and then install it. Once you install the DirectLink driver though, on the keyboard press the "SELECT" button (it's right underneath the LED display) a couple times until the '.' period or dot is shown over the "PRESETS" arrow. Then click the "+" plus button a few times until you get to the tenth preset. So your LED should display "P10." (including the dot there). You HAVE to have this on Preset 10... otherwise it won't do poop. Slide the C1 slider (The Volume) to see if there's a change. It worked for me. I'm happy - just got it today. Cheers people.
