Is this printer compatible? Epson Stylus CX3810 All-In-One Printer

It has a USB port, but under system requirements it says

System requirements
PC Windows® 98SE/Me/2000/XP

Mac® N/A

Power Mac G4, Mac OS X (10.4.2)

Hi, Danielle Marie —

I say, "No."

I've heard cases where peripherals that claimed to be Mac-compatible weren't — or required a lot of extra work re: installation, troubleshooting, driver support, etc. The latter — software that enables computer-printer interaction (called drivers = kernel extensions in OS X) — is usually the area where conflicts or lack of support cause problems.

I can't recall an instance of the opposite. Although there may be some cases when "System Requirements — Mac: Not Applicable" don't mean what it says, I wouldn't bet on it.

The Epson America website for the Stylus CX3810 says the same thing. Check the links to FAQs »» System requirements.

I have a Stylus CX6600, and it works fine — but it was advertised as supporting Mac OS X. Even then, I've had to call Epson tech. support 3 times in a few months...

Warm regards,
Dean

I'm happy to say that I have seen this only rarely, if ever.

I disagree completely. It's actually very, very common, at least in my experience, for peripherals that aren't "supposed" to work with Macs to actually be usable. This is especially true with printers, where the Gimp-Print (now Gutenprint) project includes many drivers for printers that don't officially support Macs (these drivers are often included with Mac OS distributions, in what I would say is an excellent move on Apple's part).

In a desperate attempt to stay on topic, I'll mention that the latest incarnation of Gutenprint includes preliminary support for the CX3810.

Hi, Marnen —

Please accept a warm welcome to Apple Discussions.

Thanks for your comments. I'm always open to learning new things — and glad to hear I'm wrong about this. I've read many threads here in Apple Discussions during the time I've participated where folks had a lot of trouble with, e.g., HP printers. So... are you saying in essence that all printers are actually Mac OS X 10.4.x-compatible?

Now the question, for the average user, is how to utilize what you've said, at least for cases where solutions aren't transparent — because needed drivers aren't "included with Mac OS distributions" or require special consideration during set-up. Apple's KnowledgeBase and Help guidance printer set-up isn't always as simple and straightforward as it could be. Any suggestions?

Thanks again,
Dean

The newest release of the Gutenprint (Gimp-Print) drivers will support printing on the Epson Stylus CX3810. You can download the 5.0.0rc3 version of these driver here.

According to other posts in this thread, you can apparently use VueScan for the scanner portion of this peripheral.

EDIT: The new Gutenprint release claims only preliminary support for this printer. My apologies for not reading Marnen's reply completely before posting.

VueScan works with this printer / scanner quite well but they want $49 for the software otherwise you get a ' $ " watermark on image.

Gutenprint works fine but no services , I think you have to hunt around for add ons for service like ink status.

This printer works perfectly fine in Ubuntu linux and windows XP ...

Why the heck can't espon make it easy for the Mac Users ...

the jerks...

Got the Espon CX3810 scanning in Tiger perfectly .

Go to this link http://www.ellert.se/twain-sane/ to download the installs gettext , libusb, sane-backends, sane-preference-pane , and Twain-sane-interface. Note install packages in the order I listed them important.

Once all packages are installed you must configure epson.config file
to do so go to system preferences and select SANE

select epson configure

cut and paste this

#### start cut###
# epson.conf

usb 0x4b8 0x818

usb /dev/usbscanner0

usb /dev/usb/scanner0
