CD Drive making an obnoxious noise and importing CDs very slowly...HELP!

I have an iMac with Mac OS X Version 10.5.8 - and put a brand new CD into the CD drive to import into iTunes...it started making this awful noise that sounded like the computer was getting ready to take off. iTunes automatically came up and recognized the disc, and when I started importing it, it was taking over a minute to import each song, and was still making noises. I restarted the computer, but it didn't help. What is going on? Any help will be appreciated...Thanks!

If this is happening with all CDs and DVDs then it sounds like your optical drive is faulty. You'll have to get it looked at by an Apple repair shop.

Or just get an external optical drive and use that. They are cheap. I often borrow CDs and DVDs from the library and they have stickers all over them that throw the balance off and/or rub against the inside of the iMac's optical drive. If they work at all they make an awful helicopter noise. But they play fine in my external USB optical drive.
