Apps won't update

Does anyone know please why my Apps have stopped updating on on iPod Touch 1G?
Update button changes from blue to green install button and back to blue update button. Have tried resetting, logging out etc but to no avail. My sons 2G still seem to work ok.
Any ideas what is going wrong?

I'm experiencing this problem too and, while I don't know much about what is causing it yet, I do know it doesn't have to do with what iOS the individual apps require. This is definitely a problem with the app store interface itself. Once you enter Updates, the frames and selectable tabs are screwed up, wobbly. Hard to explain.
Only on the updates section because downloading new apps works like usual.

Also it is not just 1st Gen because I have a 2nd gen and my friend has a 3rd. I am higher than iOS 3.1
Plus there is no error message anyway. It is just some sort of glitch unacknowledged by the system. The updater apparently needs an update.

I have the exact same problem with BOTH the iPod Touch 1st Gen iOS 3.1.3, AND my iPhone 2G (1st Gen) also running iOS 3.1.3. It seems that the web team that wrote the new code for the UPDATE/INSTALL new feature of the App Store did NOT test with 3.x devices at all. They completely dropped the ball on us! Which is unbelievable, since these devices are still out there and are working fine otherwise. It's one thing to just never update them again with new firmwares, but it's another thing to BREAK them. This I can't forgive.

Please file a bug report with Apple properly. Engineers don't read these forums. https://bugreport.apple.com

A temporary workaround, at least for free apps, is to reinstall the app.

Instead of using the update feature, search for the application you want to update and select "Install". I have tested this on a couple of free apps and it works.

I have not tried with a paid application, since I think that I could be billed again for it.

Still no luck on the update.

I sent a message to Apple support using the "Apple Support Express Lane", but still no reply.

I have received an e-mail from Apple Support, where basically they suggest to either update the apps from iTunes and then sync, or to delete the apps on the iPod and reinstall. This should also work for purchased apps.

At the same time they say that the issue has been flagged as "high priority", so I guess they are working for a permanent fix.

Update all is not an option for me. I have about 5 updates that I am avoiding due to the fact they either break the app or they make it less suitable for me.

Looks like I will have to wait on this fix that is hopefully in the works. I am sure there are others who want to avoid the update all solution as well. Not to mention the fact we shouldn't be forced to do this anyway. Giving us the ability to choose what we update is a service that should continue to be available to all of us.

First, hallelujah I finally found threads describing the EXACT same problem I ran across Sun. 2/6/11 (there are like 200+ "apps won't update" threads but most are NOT re this exact NEW problem).

Second, I have iphone 3Gs, 3.1.2, that I LOVE & has worked almost flawlessly since purchase Summer 2009. It is not & never has been JB, fwiw.

Third, SAME exact "blue/update" & "green/install" DO-NOTHING tabs, just toggle back & forth, wobbly like someone else described. Very unnerving, a feel like maybe the whole phone wants to blow. Never ever had this problem before. There were No Error Msgs, No Billing popup requests, No partial DL, No hung up in Waiting to DL, Nothing like that. Just plain & simple DOES NOTHING when you tap the Update/Install tab.

Fourth, through today 2/9/11, NONE of the apps will update...still. Glad to hear it is truly an Apple screw-up & not me nor my phone!

Fifth, on Sun. 2/6/11, I tried various suggestions I read re OTHER app update problems, such as:
a) Turn off 3G. -- Didnt help, Edge came on.
b) Soft & Hard Resets. -- Neither helped.
c) Log in, log out, log out, log in, etc. to App Store from phone. -- None of that helped.
d) Erase & re-enter all billing/address info in account on phone. -- Did that twice, didnt solve the problem.
e) Tried DL a few Free apps as a test. -- They DL just fine.
f) Tried DL a Paid app, to make sure the problem was not with credit card. -- It wasnt, as the Paid app DL just fine.

Gave up.

Next day, 2/7/11, I did what I did not want to do: I started deleting a bunch of apps off the phone that did NOT contain Data that I need (such as Notes apps, Photos Storage apps, etc.).

I took screenshots of the list of App Updates first, before deleting the apps in case I want to hunt down & reinstall the dumped apps later.

I did the "mass deleting" thinking MAYBE there was some sort of LIMIT as to how many apps could be "taking up space" in the "App Updates" section of the phone's app store. -- Result? Didnt help one bit. No apps would update, still.

Then I wondered if it was some sort of END OF YEAR ROLLOVER glitch, ie, maybe app updates dated in 2010 that were never updated were preventing all other apps from updating in 2011 (since I hadnt bothered with the ever-increasing annoying app updates since 12/22/10, they are becoming such a chore I just let them pile up for a rainy day, which happened to be Sun. 2/6/11, lol). -- But I guess a Year End glitch is Not the problem, thankfully, since this thread said it is a problem at the APPLE end of things.

Lastly I want to say AMEN User uploaded file to Kam D'Bret re "Update All" NOT BEING AN OPTION & for the Same Exact Reason:

Kam D'Bret wrote:

EXACTLY User uploaded file SAME HERE!!

That makes TWO OF US so far! Count me in!

Preach it, friend! I've been avoiding Update All since July 2010 when an app update came forth that will destroy one of my most beloved apps. No way I'm updating that. (There's a thread re "Is Updating Apps Dangerous?" Well, sometimes you could say Yes It Is.)

Plus a few other app "hogs" that wont update from the phone, saying they are over 20mb & need wifi (which I dont have) or they have to be updated via Mac (but those apps work fine as is & so why hog up my memory with big fat hog updates?)

Thus, there are reasons to avoid Update All. But that leaves 22 apps at present waiting to be Updated (that HAVE DATA so I cannot delete those apps). Then 2 more updates appeared yesterday.

So... will just wait for an Apple fix.

But if Apple never fixes this Update glitch, how can we get rid of the updates sitting in the App Updates?

If you can't use the "Update all", you can follow the procedure described here:

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2519

to update the apps individually.

The KB article relates to purchased apps, but for free apps is the same: look for the app in the App Store and install from there. No need to delete it prior to re-install.

Of course this can be acceptable as a temporary workaround, and I expect that Apple will find a permanent fix.
