Yet Another Safari Spinning Beach Ball of Death Thread (YASSBBDT)

I have been having this problem for years. Tried everything suggested in other threads, so no need to tell me to read the Spinning Beach Ball of Death web page.

Safari runs ok for a few days, but then has to be restarted or even the Mac has to be rebooted once the Spinning Beach Ball of Death rears its head. Any advice? Web sites like YouTube and Google Maps seem to bring it on consistently. Could this be a Java issue? Can Java be reinstalled? If so, how does one de-install all the necessary files first?

Thanks

Hi Jim --
Thanks for starting your own new topic.

The first thing I would do is check your fonts for duplicates.
Open up your Font Book application in your Applications Folder.
Select "All Fonts" and look for duplicates or corrupted fonts.
If you do have any, there will be little dots to the right of the font names.
You can Resolve problems via the Font Book's EDIT pulldown.

Important: Restart your Mac after doing this.

Go ahead and start your own new topic on the front page of Safari.
Give us more details there, OK?

Tell us:

1. What's happening exactly? Any additions, updates, or upgrades before?
2. Is it crashing, or hanging forever?

3. When did this start happening?
4. Do you usually empty the Safari Cache and History list?

Start your own new topic, and include the answers to the above questions, OK?
That way, we can concentrate on your situation.
We'll look out for your new thread.

Bee,

Thanks for the suggestion. I had not seen that suggested before, and I had never used Font Book Application ever. I ran it, and found a little over 50 of my ~300 fonts with duplicates. I did Resolve Duplicates, and the restarted my Mac. So far so good. Let's see how it is in a few days. I will get back to you.

Cheers,
Jim

I think fixing the duplicate fonts helped as I have had Safari running for 10 days now, but the beach ball is back, though it only lasts for a while, and then I get some good time before it pops up again. So, the problem is not 100% solved. I don't know if it is really related, but this time I noticed the SBBOD started happening after I had launched Vuze. I quit Vuze, but the problem lingers.

<sigh>

Well, glad things are a little better, at least.
You know, VUZE put on the CT Loader Toolbar.
And that frigging thing has messed up more Macs that I can count.

Close Safari first, and see if you can find it in these locations:

HD/Library/Application Support/Conduit
HD/Library/InputManagers/CTLoader
HD/Library/Receipts/ctloader.pkg
HD/Library/Receipts/<Toolbar name>.pkg
HD/Library/Application Support/SIMBL/Plugins/CT2285220.bundle
HD/Users/<User name>/Library/Application Support/Conduit

It may not be in every single location, but get it out where ever you find it.
If you found & deleted any of these, Restart Safari. Any Better?

I searched around the internet a bit more and found some suggestions for solving similar Safari issues.

So, what I did now was two things:

Removed the folder HD/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration
Restarted the Mac, zapping the PRAM by holding down Command-Option-P-R until the second chime.

Let's see how this goes the next week or two.

I really had high hopes for my last attempt to fix this issue. After I did it, Safari was very responsive. However, today, after 10 days, I once again had to restart Safari as the SBBOD had just gotten too annoying once again.

My search for a permanent fix continues, but I suspect this problem will never go away until I buy a new Mac (and I hope to God it goes away then!).

Hi Jim --

So, are you're leaving Safari open for 10 days?
I shut mine down at least once a day.
I might have misunderstood what you said there . . .

With Safari open, go to System Preferences from the main Apple Menu,
go to Language & Text. Then in the "Language" tab, make sure English is at the top of the list.
Then go over to "Input Sources" and uncheck all but the English ones.

Then Restart Safari.

Bee,

Yes, I leave it running for as long as possible. Years ago I would leave it running for months. A Mac rarely needs to be restarted, and other than that I never found any reason to restart Safari.

I will give your other suggestion, I don't have a "Language & Text" icon. I presume you mean "International" and then "Input Menu". I did have Russian checked as well as US English. I can try unchecking it.

Thanks
