Using mini-DVI with DVI-HDMI Cable to Plasma TV

Hi There, new to the forum with a question!

I have a late 2006 (White) iMac 20" upgraded to 256MB VRAM and 4GB of RAM. I have recently purchased a 50PK350 LG 50" Plasma which only offers a VGA input and PC Audio in, or HDMI. I have a mini-DVI-to-DVI adaptor and mini-DVI-to-VGA adaptor which I plan to use in conjunction with 2 possible solutions:

1. Use with a DVI-HDMI cable. The question here is will connecting via HDMI transfer audio from my iMac to the TV, while using the TV as an extended desktop? If not, what solutions are available?

2. If i use the VGA-VGA cable with a 3.5mm Audio cable also as an extended desktop, i know this will work to transfer both audio and video but will it allow me to achieve 1080p resolution (1920x1080) on the television and if so, will it be good quality video?

3. What is the purpose of DVI-VGA cables? If i use the mini-DVI-to-DVI adaptor, connecting a (DVI to VGA cable to this) with the DVI side to the iMac and the VGA side to the TV --> what advantage does this offer me over a normal VGA-VGA?

4. If any of the above makes sense and I can use the DVI output from my iMac, does the cable I buy HAVE to be _DVI-D Dual Link_ when connecting to the iMac or will other DVI iterations work too?

I'm sorry for this overly complex question... any help at all if will be much appreciated!

Cheers,
Josh

Welcome to the Apple Discussions!

1. No. There is no audio signal from the m-DVI port, no matter what adapter that you use. You would need to run a separate analog audio cable from the mini's audio outport to the TV.

2. The iMac should be able to provide a resolution through VGA that your TV can use, but it will not be a digital picture because VGA is an analog signal, so you may are may not be satisfied with the quality of the picture that you get.

3. Because the iMac does not have a VGA port then the most direct way to use the iMac with a VGA display is with the m-DVI to VGA adapter. Then you just need a standard VGA to VGA cable to connect the iMac to the TV.

4. There is no need for a Dual link adapter with the display that you are considering.
