Firmware upgrade/iTunes not recognizing internet connection

Hello: I have an iphone 3gs and would like to upgrade my firmware. If I click on "help" and "check for updates," however, I get an error message that says "The iTunes update server could not be contacted. Please check your Internet connection, or try again later."

I'm connected to the internet, of course, but itunes isn't recognizing this for some reason. Any advice would be appreciated.

I updated the itunes software and then attempted to update the firmware, but after the status said "extracting," I saw an error message that said:

"iTunes could not back up the iphone because a session could not be started with the iphone. Please disconnect and reconnect the iphone, then try again."

Any idea why this might be happening?
