sounds like they tried to "guess" your passcode and have locked the device with too many wrong entries.
sadly the only resolution is to set the ipad to "restore" mode and the perform a full factory settings restore within iTunes. This will give you the option to disable the passcode upon the next rebuild of your last back-up

You will not have to lose all of the data, settings etc if you restore from a back up.
