Computer Freezes while importing and converting music

I recently updated to Itunes 10.1.2, and now anytime I want to import a cd to my library or convert a non-aac format song into aac format, my computer freezes. Whats weird is my computer only freezes at 99.9 % importing/converting. i.e If I want to import a cd with 16 tracks, itunes will import the first 15 and then almost finish the 16th when my computer freezes. The first 15 songs are then added to my library and run properly upon restart of my computer but the 16th is not. Converting does the same thing even i convert only one song. I've tried re-installing, and downgrading to an older versions of itunes (9.2.1.5) and the same problem occurs. Any suggestions?

I am also having this issue. I had iTunes 9 and I just updated to the latest version 10 and the same issue persists...

It is exactly as the first person described. It doesn't matter what audio CD, which drive I import from, or which tracks I select. It will always get to the very end of the process and then hard freeze the computer! After reboot I will find that all of the tracks have been created on disk, though not all have been added to the iTunes library.

BREAKTHROUGH - OK, here's the scoop. I decided to try iTunes in Safe Mode, and after iTunes's approximately 8 complaint message boxes, it came up and I tried an import and it DIDN'T freeze the computer. So then I tried it in normal mode again with the Audio Service disabled and voila, no freeze again. Then I enabled the audio service and went into the Sound control panel and went to properties on "Speakers" and then the Enhancements tab and checked "Disable all sound effects". Then I tried it in iTunes again and again, it did NOT freeze.

LONG STORY SHORT - iTunes was conflicting with the Sound Blaster Audigy HD on my machine. This is an iTunes issue since no other software I use has this problem. iTunes freezes at the end of import because it plays a SOUND at the end which bombs with the SB Audigy HD and freezes the machine. Strangely, the freeze does NOT occur when iTunes plays music, but only when it tries to play one of its internal sound effects... APPLE, PLEASE FIX THIS - I LIKE MY SB AUDIGY HD and don't want to have to leave it disabled to use iTunes!

I have had a similar problem whenever I try to convert songs to mp3 using iTunes - iTunes crashes. I found Exclusive Mode in the advanced settings of my sound card, and disabled it, and then restarted iTunes, but it still crashes. What else do I need to change in my Windows settings to make iTunes work, or when is this iTunes bug going to be fixed?

Thank you SO much for your info on the sound issue causing my ASUS to freeze while importing songs in itunes. I have Realtek HD Audio Manager and was able to change the sounds that itunes plays to NONE from the tray menu RIGHT CLICK then choose System Sound Events. Scroll down to itunes and highlight the two items and in the dropdown box below change the sound to NONE and then hit apply.

It fixed the issue! Thank you again!

As for the MSVCR80.dll issue that some are having - follow the helps out there on the web - they worked for me as well.
