Random, spontaneous restart / logoffs

Greetings,

Over the last few days I've started experiencing a very troubling and most bizarre problem with my MacPro. Essentially, I'll be working on something and then all of the sudden the screen goes blue. A few seconds later the screen comes back and it's as though the machine has restarted. All my work is gone and all apps are closed and then all of my startup items start going through their cycles.

I've seen that some others have experienced a few similar problems, but they're experiencing full restarts not the blue screen syndrome that I'm going through. Has anyone else encountered this?

Here's what my console log is saying around the moment of the occurence:

*Disconnect all peripherals from your computer.* Safe Boot by restarting your computer while holding down the "shift" key. Safe booting disables all nonessential processes, often times allowing you to start up when you would otherwise crash.

As of OS X 10.5.6 Safe Boot deletes the dynamic loader shared cache location in the /var/db/dyld directory. A corrupt cache here can cause the blue screen crash. Once you restart normally, the cache will be recreated. This should take care of the issue.

Daemian–I'm curious as to whether CMCSK's suggestion resolved the issue you were experiencing, as I have been battling this same intermittent log-out issue for a good month or so. Some days it happens 2-3 times, other times it may only happen every 2-3 days, but I have to log-in, just as you describe.

Thanks.

Have the same probleme here with my MacBook Pro 2.2 GHz (C2D, Santa Rosa), Mac OS X 10.6.7. My MacBook Pro showed the nvidia-graphics (black display) failure and therefore got it's motherboard replaced.

The sudden blue-screen logout crash mostly happens when working with video-intensive programs, like a lot of Flash videos opened in various Safari tabs, etc. But it does also happen in cases when Flash isn't involved.

My MBP crashes about up to 3 times a day on me with those symptoms:

- all apps seem to hang

- no user input is possible, besides moving mouse pointer

- after that all is on halt, blue screen appears

- system does re-login with finder restart and all apps/documents that were opened before got closed without chance to save anything in front of that event

I can't remember that I encountered this problem on systems prior to OS X 10.6.x.

Summarizing other threads I've read so far, the culprit should be in some relation to the "WindowServer" process.

I did also try the Safe Boot method, but that didn't solve the issue for me.

@macinfomo sums the "sudden blue-screen" symptom very nicely. It does seem to be something closely related to video-intensive processes. I'm also running a bit of a deductive test to see if this problem may be somehow related to NeoOffice, as I don't know that I've seen the "SBS" when NeoOffice has been closed. Is there anyone on here having this problem who does not use NeoOffice? A quick search about NeoOffice and Window Server took me to this NeoOffice forum post, which I wonder if may be related? http://trinity.neooffice.org/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&p=61728 …maybe there's no connection.

Hi all, I've spent hours trying to find a fix for this problem, but there are no true fixes apparent (i've tried all suggested in posts and I still get at least one Windowserver crash a day). I believe its something deep in OSX, and something that Apple must know about but isn't willing to fess up about and spend $$ to resolve in Snow Leopard. I'm guessing they've fixed it in Lion so I'm willing to bet the 30 bucks or so and give it a try, although I'm not impressed with Apple's response to this issue. This is a fatal osx bug that they simply should have fixed a long time ago.

Sudden-Random-Spontaneous blue screen flashes then I see the login screen. Lose all work. All apps shut down and logged out and the login screen appears.

This has happened twice while browsing on safari and once on firefox and once on Google Chrome and twice while using iTunes and Pathfinder. Extremely random and can not seem to be intentionally duplicated.

I recently bought my first Macbook Pro 3 months ago. I am severely disappointed. Now my 90 day phone coverage is over and I must pay $349 for the “apple protection plan” to get any service (but who will protect me from apple?).

It is true I have a lot of apps installed and there are lots of factors involved, but although there is a problem both the service center and the phone service refuse to help (unless, of course, I have the “protection plan” but how far does the “protection” go?).

I think the sudden blue screen and logout is happening because of the peripherals. Lately I have had firewire and usb external hard drives plugged in because that is where I keep my iTunes libraries and lately I have been doing work with the external hard drives.

  1. I did the “hold opt-CMD- P- R while restarting” to redo the memory.
  2. I restarted in safe mode and that seemed to work for a day.
  3. I did the onyx.app clean scenario
  4. I am thinking about doing a clean install and start over again.

I admire all you sleuths out there, trying to find out which 3rd party app is the culprit, and investing effort in removing the app, doing full erase / reinstalls, safe boots etc. etc.

I don't have boom installed, safe boot doesn't stop continued blue screen logouts, erase/reinstall does nothing, Lion doesn't provide relief and I'm at the end of my rope on this. The bottom line: third party apps should NOT crash the OS... Or put it a bit differently: a robust OS should NOT allow a third party app to crash the system. In fact, I've had this happen when NO third party apps are installed and all I'm using is Safari and Quicktime. Go figure!

I've asked this before - why is Apple acting like this problem doesn't exist? I've been a loyal Apple user since Mac SE, Quadra and LC days. Now I'm thinking about switching to a PC. I thought the day would never come that I'd utter those words. I can't believe Apple has not taken action on this.

In so many threads I see all the brave souls trying to decipher what is going on... thinking they've found the problem, having a brief day or week or two of jubilation, then the problem reappears.

If anyone from Apple is reading this... take note. You need to fix this!!! I regularly meet IT professionals who are hearing rumours that Apple is in a downward spiral in terms of customer service and product robustness. This is one compelling example of this trend.

Sorry to be so blunt, but I am very very frustrated!!!! I've spent literally days on this issue and lost days of work due to having to recover from this problem. It's the OS, not the app, so fix the OS!!!

Jul 28, 2011 10:52 AM in response to Barky6

I'm on board with @Barky6. I've seen this issue since the beginning of this thread and DO NOT have Boom installed either–didn't even know what it was until today. Typically the problem occurs when streaming video, but this is NOT ALWAYS the case. I believe the issue to be processor-related, however @Barky6 notes that it has happened to him despite only running 2 apps, both Apple native.

I have concerns of with Apple's growing popularity, customer service may be taking a back seat, as well.

As a loyal Apple user of 17+ years, and frequent evangelist, I too hope that this issue is quickly pinpointed and resolved.
