Static IP WiFi Sharing

My MacBook Pro is connected via ethernet cable to a satellite system here on the base in Afghanistan. They only give us one static IP address each. I've activated the internet sharing to turn the Mac into a wireless transmitter, but the iphone won't go online. It connects to the Mac, but no internet. Is there anyway to share the 1 static IP address with the iPhone?

If you have one IP address, what you could do is configure both with the same IP address and then make sure that only one device is turned on at the time. By this, put the iPhone into Airplane mode when the MacBook is on. You will also need the subnet and DNS data if you are going to use static IP addressing and these can be found in the network preferences when your MacBook Pro is on.

SHARK!

Understood. Here's the prob, I have only 1 IP address assigned to me and I use the MacBook Pro as a wireless by using the internet sharing option via airport option and having the MacBook act as a WiFi. It's connected to the satellite via ethernet. So, I guess the MacBook needs an IP, and then the iPhone needs an IP to connect through the Mac.

Any solutions?

Yep. Internet sharing is already on. The MacBook is sharing using its airport, that's how the iPhone connects to it. The problem is that when the MacBook connects to the satellite (internet), it takes the single IP address. Then, when the iPhone connects to the MacBook using the internet sharing via airport, there's no IP address left for it to use.

My question is, is there any way to share the connection with the MacBook, using 1 IP address only? Is that what's called a WiFi hotspot?

The Internet Sharing should work. I don't use it myself but I tried turning it on and it behaved as expected.

Try turning the internet sharing off and even turn the wireless off too so you're left with just the ethernet active on your macbook. At this point is it safe to assume you have a working connection? The static IP address you are assigned, is it one in the private IP range?

If you turn off cellular data on the phone the only way you should be able to do stuff like browse the web etc is if you have a working wireless connection. Try turning the internet sharing back on, ensuring you are sharing the ethernet connection to the wireless, so ethernet in the drop down menu and AirPort ticked. Maybe even try changing the network name and using WEP in the AirPort Options. WEP is crap but who knows, maybe your mac will be more willing to share the connection if you do.

If it still isn't working try looking in Settings : Wi-Fi : and click the blue arrow to the right of your wireless connection (when you are connected to it). How does the IP address and Router compare to those assigned to the mac?

On 10.7 (Sys Prefs > Network):

- Set the Ethernet to pick up the static IP address as usual (Using DCHP). Check this works as normal first and note IP address allocated; mine was 192.168.15.2 (Router = 192.168.15.1, Subnet = 255.255.255.0).

- Under Wi-Fi > Advanced Button > TCP/IP tab. Set Configure IPv4 to Using DHCP with manual address, then add different IP address, mine = 192.168.0.1

- Share ethernet on Wi-Fi as normal and connect iPad or iPhone. Mine is working fine now 🙂
