I went through the process of renaming the file extention and have a music clip showing up as a ringtone in my iTunes. When I sync my phone and go to ringtones in Settings, it is not showing up.

I'm a new user of the iPhone and could appreciate and direction you can give me!

If this ringtone is available when selecting Ringtones under Library in the iTunes source list, is the ringtone also available under the Ringtones tab for your iPhone sync preferences with iTunes? If so, is Sync Ringtones selected under the Ringtones tab for your iPhone sync preferences with iTunes along with this ringtone being selected?

Thanks Allan for the quick reply.

When you speak of the tab for sync preferences, is this on the phone or in iTunes?

    You're welcome.

It may be a good idea for you to at least glance through the iPhone user guide.

    http://manuals.info.apple.com/enUS/iPhone_iOS4_UserGuide.pdf

Apple also includes an iPhone optimized version of the user guide on the iPhone accessed via an included Safari bookmark.

To access the various tabs for your iPhone sync preferences with iTunes, with your iPhone connected to iTunes and available under the Devices tab in the iTunes source list, select your iPhone under Devices to make the various tabs for your iPhone sync preferences with iTunes available in the main iTunes window.

If you're looking for that ringtone to show up under the Text Tone list, note that you can't use custom ringtones there. Otherwise, follow the other advice given.

    HI,

So I have purchased in the iStore the ringtone I require and I can see it in my list in my itunes, but how do I now add this to my ringtones list?

I did download the User Guide, but must admit that at 274 pages, I haven't really looked through much of it yet.

I found what you were referring to, the tab in iTunes for ringtones. It was not checked to sync . . .

What puzzles me now though is that in my Library I have a ringtone folder with a file in it . . . in my Devices categories I have a ringtone folder . . . but after syncing my iPhone twice, the file will not move from iTunes onto my iPhone even though the sync all ringtones option is checked.

I've been a Windows / Windows Mobile user for years although I have had an iPod. For some reason, my brain has never wrapped itself around the iTunes interface. As it's more important to me now, I'll have to get used to it!

It's fixed, but I'm not sure why.

I disconnected my phone from my PC, closed iTunes, and reconnected my phone. Of course, iTunes then opened and synced.

Using this sequence, the ringtone was transfered and listed under "custom" in the sounds folder.

I guess the phone opening up iTunes was the key?

    Thanks, Allan for the direction!

I've tried this remedy a couple of times, but it isn't working for me.  The ringtone is in my Ringtones Library in iTunes,  but it doesn't show up in Ringtones on my iPhone 4.
