Unable to join network - fed up of this msg

I have 4th generation ipod touch running software version 4.2.1

whenever I try to connect to locked internet (like at home, at work) I put in the password but it ALWAYS says "Unable to join network" Yes, I have checked the pwd is correct, yes I know it is case sensitive, Yes I have reset the "reset network connections".

I am getting a bit fed up with this now - what can I do to connect to internet. When I look at Youtube explainations (obviously not on my ipod!!) or look at the user manual it does not show the same menus as I have on my new iPod.

Pleeeeeeeeeeeeeease anyone help me

thanks

4th gen, Windows XP, brand new!

This may depend on how your network at home is set-up. If your network is using static IP address, you need to enter a IP address in your network settings and then enter the exact same IP address on your ipods network settings. However the most commonly uses setting for wireless access points( routers) is DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) Which gives out IP addresses when a device, that has entered the correct password for the networks encryption(password), requests a IP address. It is possible to have to many devices connected to a router at once or possibly the router is not in distance to join the network. At work this may be a different situation, administrators can block devices that are unknown to the network. My suggestions are, to check your network setting(at home) and make sure they are set for DHCP. You can do this by entering you router IP address in your internet browser on your computer(usually something like 192.168.2.1). Check the distance between your ipod and your router. If you are using a b or g router then this distance will be far less than when you are using a n router. Usually try to be within about 20 feet, however the closer the better. If you need this on lighter terms let me know. Wireless networks are hard to understand and i feel that this may lye in the network and not your ipod.

A good way to check to see it the problem is the networks for instance, go to a near by store, or some place that offers free wifi and see if you cant connect there, then you will have a pretty good idea were the problem is.

Thanks for the suggestions. The iPod will connect to wifi where there is no password but as soon as it requires a password the thing doesn't want to play.
The IP address on the back of the router is 192.168.1.1 but when I type it into my browser (on the PC) it is "page not found". This is pretty unusual I suppose - but then I do live in China and lots of unusual things happen here!

I use a wired internet connection for my computer (it is old!) - it's only other people that use my wireless connection (with no problems) so it has very light use.

The iPod sees the wifi no problem - very strong but the thing never gets past the password stage. So in short, it's only the password which the iPod fails at. Any password, not just work and home. If no password then it's OK.

It would be great to get over this hurdle as I was looking forward to using my new iPod. It's like buying a new red sports car and then finding the keys don't fit.

Any help, gratefully received.

I have not been able to get onto the modem with my own PC but can with the use of my friend's PC. Disappointingly (but unsurprisingly) it's just illegible because it's in Chinese and our PCs are in English so it doesn't even show the characters properly (even if we could read them).

My question is..... shall I get another modem? Is this the problem? The big BUT is - Why is it that wireless PCs brought into this house can connect to the wifi easily but not my iPod?

Thanks to all and hoping for some more suggestions...

No where in any of your posts did you mention what type of router you are using or which encryption system you are using. If you are running 4.2.1 on your touch, you had better have a router that is <3 years old and running the latest firmware. If not, your idea of buying a new router is a good one.

WEP encryption and Apple products are not the happiest together. Since WEP is so easily hacked, you will need to change your encryption to something that works - WPA2 is highly recommended and a good 8-12 character password will serve you well.

Well, maybe I can help. Today I noticed that BOTH my Gen 3 and Gen 4 Touches wouldn't connect. Even a long call with Belkin didn't help. So I called Applecare, and got a nice lady in Georgia.
On the Gen4, we tried "reset network settings", "forget this network" and also, unplugging the router. That's what she thought worked, because when I said, "stay with me while I try the Gen3", I turned it on, and it was connected, too! This is all with my 5-letter, 3-digit password. My Belden "security mode" is
WPA/WPA2-Personal(PSK).
So there you are. Both of 'em get on my network now.

Hello,

I am also having trouble connecting my 4g touch. I have dial up network and I fully receive the signal in my ipod, but when I click on Safari it says that "Safari count not open the page because the server stopped responding". I think it is all cuz of HTTP proxy server. how do i find it and what would be my router and DNS?

Appreciate your help on this.

Thanks,
Sameer

Guys, please help. I don't know if my iPod 4th generation is already broken because I kept receiving the"Unable to join network" message but the router is okay and my laptop can connect but the iPod cannot. I already clicked the forget this network but it seems like it just got the problem worse. I already reset the network setting but still the same. I turned it off but nothing happened. It's so ******* I might throw it off a cliff.
