power adapter not working

Hi guys. today I plugged my ipod touch into my power adapter to recharge its battery, which I've done hundreds of times before, and today the charger/ipod decided not to work. first of all, the battery does not attempt to recharge, and sometimes if I wait a few seconds (without plugging it out of the power adapter), the ipod just shuts down instantly (does this mean the charger is damaging the ipod?). I do not recall doing anything which could have damaged either of my ipod or charger. (although i noticed today that one of the two small spike things on the side of the power adapter is missing) in fact, my ipod charges alright when I use the cable that i got when i purchased the ipod to recharge via my laptop. is the problem to do with my ipod or the charger? i'm not too worried about the charger (which my dad got from ebay for a cheap price) but i would be concerned if my ipod is somehow damaged or has been damaged by the power adapter forcibly shutting the ipod down for god knows what reason. I have already tried restoring my ipod to factory mode and the charger still doesn't work.
