Help! "Mac OS X cannot start up from this disc"

Trying to upgrade from 10.4.11 to 10.6.3 with Snow Leopard Install DVD. MacBook Pro 2.16 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 2 GB RAM, 120 GB hard drive with plenty of space running 10.4.11 without any problems.
Ran Install DVD, selected English, AGREE, Continue and get window to choose startup disk with icons of my startup volume and TechTool eDrive both with yellow triangles with exclamation marks to choose from and when I click on either I get "Mac OS X cannot start up from this disc" and I can proceed no further.
Volumes are both GUID partition schemes. I had run Disc Warrior for directory, files and permissions. Also ran Disc Utility for permissions and repair. Removed eDrive partition. Removed all account start up items. Started up computer from Install DVD using both Option and C keys as well. Always with same result.
I do have another Mac running 10.6.6 without difficulty but don't see where starting up in Target mode would make a difference.

Take a look at this long thread:
[Cannot install Snow Leopard over 10.5.8 because 'can't boot from' boot disk |http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2130966]

[This post within it|http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=10063687#10063687] suggests:

For all affected users: Please open Disk Utility > Highlight the boot HD > click on the partition tab. Just move the partition size a bit and return to original value. Then hit apply. Then see if the install works. Thanks.

You would presumably run Disk Utility from the SL Install DVD after option-booting there. Disk Utility on the Utility menu at the upper left, after you choose your language. If you decide to try this, be sure you have your system backed up first - it strikes me as somewhat risky.
