Putting Numbered Lists in a Table Column

I want to set up a table in Pages in which the data in one column is a numbered list and the second column is unlisted. This will cause each new numbered row to start at the same level.

When I assign numbered, continue with previous, all the cells have the number 1. Other options for the numbered lists behave as set, just that the numbers won't increment for each row. Trying to do the same as I can in Word.

I know you wrote this 6 years ago, but maybe you'll still see this.

I took your suggestion of adding a separate column at the left side of my table and dragging the (now yellow) dot, and it worked great...until my table continued onto the next page. I can't drag the yellow dot over the page break, so I can't continue the numbering over the whole 6-page table. Is there a way to do this?

Thanks!

Setting a sequence in two cells then dragging the white dot down over existing blank cells will propagate the sequence as text. However, it does not use the List - Numbered option. Turning on Numbered List just puts a 1 at the start of each cell instead of 1, 2, 3 as expected. The progression is added to the right most field in the cells.

I want to use a Numbered List so that additional rows will be numbered as the table is extended by Adding Rows Below. The List Numbering works fine outside the table in plain text with tiered numbers working as expected.

I suspect List Numbered in table cells is not supported the same way it is in paragraphs of text.

There is no need to suspect this or that. Just read carefully the available resources or the answers already posted here.

When the User Guide describes List features, it carefully state that they are text components.

A table is not a text object able to contain lists.
It's a container able to contain cells which are containers able to contain text which is able to contain lists.

"Carefully" read many parts of the Users Guide and now understand how cells in Pages tables are not like cells in Word tables.
Added a column to the front of the table that contains the sequence numbers that I can quickly create by dragging the white dot. Stayed with the table format as it lets me have two or more column cells per number and the row auto-sizes to the length of the largest cell. Not obvious how I could format a text list to achieve auto-sizing over multiple columns.
Still think it would be good if Numbered Lists could carry across table rows as it would automate the numbering and provide more options.
Thanks

You may think what you want but, as Apple engineers don't read these forums, it's perfectly useless.

If you want to pass them your advice,
_Go to "Provide Numbers Feedback" in the "Numbers" menu_, describe what you wish.
Then, cross your fingers, and wait _at least_ for iWork'11 😉

But, as your wish don't seem to be consistent with the Numbers design, I guess that you not succeed.

Filed a request with Apple asking for an option to have Numbered Lists carry across rows in Tables in Pages. Was hoping it might be in iWorks 10 but sounds like you have inside information.
Numbered Lists work the same in Numbers. Adding formulae to Table cells might be better but the formulae do not automatically propagate to new rows in either Pages nor Numbers.

Many of my documents use Simple numbering or Legal (Tiered) numbering to aid in referencing parts of the document. The automatic numbering of text supports the easy flexibility of indenting and Tiered Numbers. Extending this to multicolumn table formatted documents would have value to me.

I also was looking for a solution similiar to yours. I am impressed with your respectful replies to such pompous remarks. Thanks for sharing your solution. It will help me a great deal.

It seems there is an unwritten rule that you can't help anyone out on Apple forums unless you first mock them, put them in their place, and make sure they know they were idiots for even asking the question. Then the community will think about helping you.
