Home Sharing - PLEASE HELP!!

Hi there,

I have just purchased the 2nd gen Apple TV and have spent the best part of the weekend banging my head against the wall trying to get home sharing to work.

If anyone can help I would be most grateful.

- ATV2 is connected to the internet and my Apple login as most of the content is showing up OK.
- I have iTunes setup with Home sharing turned on on both ATV2 and my PC, but I cannot see anything under "COMPUTERS" in the ATV2 menu - no library showing up at all.
- I am using McAfee security and have tried de-activating the firewall with no luck.
- I have tried connecting both my laptop and ATV2 to the router by ethernet to isolate whether there is a WiFi issue - no luck!
- I have read countless forums trying to find a solution and it seems that there are people out there who are having this issue but I havent seen a straight-forward solution yet.

I'm hoping there is someone out there who is way more tech-savvy than me and has an answer.

Thanks in anticipation.

Just thought I would update this thread since even after the latest update my ATV2 is still losing connection with my Mac Pro. As another user suggested, the easy way I "fix" this every time is to turn the airport card off on my mac and then back on. Boom, two seconds and the ATV2 sees and will play everything on my iTunes.

To be clear, my setup is: wireless Mac Pro 10.6.6, ATV2 wired.

I have tried two different routers and both exhibit this issue so my money is that it is a home sharing issue, not my hardware.

Anyone that has my setup should definitely just try the airport on/off trick. Hopefully in the next update they will fix this and the YouTube ordering issue. Ugh.

Hi all

I was having real problems with my Dell laptop and streaming to Apple TV2. I've now bought a new MacBook Pro and changed my router... and am still having issues. Different issues, but issues nonetheless. I will describe them here in the hope that Apple can us the info to sort it out as I'm now of the opinion that this is an Apple issue and not me being stupid!

Main problem at the moment is that Home Sharing does not work on the ATV. The ATV can 'see' my library on the MBP, but cannot see anything in it or will not connect to it.

I can generally stream music via airplay from both MBP and iPhone 4 to the ATV, video from the iPhone but not from the MBP (gives an error).

iPhone can almost always see the ATV and can act as a remote, but it cannot see my iTunes library.

All of the above is patchy - resetting the router, restarting iTunes, restarting the ATV sometimes fixes elements of it but I've yet to get it all working at once.

Internet connection (e.g. to Youtube) from the ATV is excellent.

I have the latest versions of iTunes, iOS and firmware on all equipment. I've read almost everything I can find on support pages and these forums.

Changing my router from a TalkTalk Huawei HG 532 to the current Netgear DG834GT has helped a bit (I think) as it's now more consistent and my HP wireless printer now works perfectly with the MBP. I was previously able to stream video from MBP to ATV though...

All in all I'm extremely frustrated (like many on here...) and hope Apple will recognise this as an issue ASAP.

I wanted to add that now I am not just losing sync between my ATV2 and Mac Pro in between watching movies/tv shows, but now it is happening regularly WHILE WATCHING a movie or tv show. As in the ATV2 kicks all the way back to the home screen, and I have to then go do a workaround (turning airport on mac pro off and on) to get the link back.

For the first few weeks they were losing the link only while nothing was playing, but now it is happening a lot in the middle of watching something.

LAME!

This has just started doing this, I guess after the latest update. I was watching a film last night and it just shot back to the main menu.
The ATV 2 sometimes displays "no movies/songs/albums" in library - when there are. A reset of the ATV has to be done and all is then OK.

My system is all Apple and the ATV seems to the be the weak part. Im quite disappointed to be honest.

I eventually sorted out the issue.

Had to re-initial the AppleTV (in the general setting menu of the ATV) .. then re-enter ALL set-up (wifi login and password and home sharing account login and password) .. then had to wait watching at the spinning wheel .. then 45 minutes after I started to give it a last try to sort it out it was back to normal.

only 45 minutes + the time spent to try to find out a solution .. all together probably 2 hours lost .. NOT what I can call a user friendly plastic box .. too bad 😟

I have been having the same problems w ATV unable to home share computer files and went so far as to buy Apple Care for the ATV JUST to have someone to talk to about it.
Well, spoke to technical support for one hour then handed off to a supervisor for another hour. Last action was for him to connect with my iMac and download the logs. These were sent to the engineers and to get back to me.
In the meantime my husband purchased a new router. He hooked it up and all worked perfectly. It was amazing!
Still don't know why we were able to use all the Wifi functions of the ATV but not the sharing, but glad does now. FYI we replaced a Belkin N300 with Cicso Linksys E2000.

"The other odd thing that we found last night was that my iPhone remote app can control my iTunes on the PC via Home sharing, so there isnt any issues around homesharing working on the PC - the issue seems to be with the ATV2 "seeing" the Itunes library in the PC."

Have same issue, spent 12hrs trying to get APTV to recognize itunes library. Then, suddenly, it worked for 30mins and then disappeared after I (foolishly) disconnected Cat5 cable briefly.
Rebooting, re-entering id, resetting original set up etc made no difference. No files show under computer heading on APTV, yet iphone remote controls itunes and APTV perfectly indicating that homeshare was alive.
Clearly this is an AppleTV issue that needs urgent attention. WAKE UP APPLE AND FIX THIS ISSUE.

I've been going nuts the last couple of weeks trying to figure out why I couldn't stream to the ATV2 any longer. The other night I was playing with my iPod Touch and it streamed fine. Home Sharing had to be working! The only thing I could come up with is I needed to turn the airport card on even though it was never on before. It hasn't missed a lick yet. It always shows my computer in the ATV2 menu now.

I am yet another with the same problem. In addition, I just purchased a new Sony Homeshare product that is also trying to access my laptop's media (through Windows Media Player), and neither unit can access the media on my Windows Vista laptop. I spent 2 1/2 hours on the phone working my way up to the top level Sony tech support, who took over my computer and found no problems with the settings.

It was only after the call did I try to access iTunes from my Apple TV for the first time (92 days after purchase & therefore out of free help warranty).

Reading the other replies to this post and with my Sony experience today, I am thinking that this problem lies not with the ATV or the Sony units themselves but with the way the LAN is set up.
