Adobe flash player

When comes iTunes with an update for Safari, in a way that I can download websites based on flash? Or maybe Apple could reach some agreement?

Intel Core i7, Windows 7

Probably never. The Apple CEO (Steve Jobs) has stated that Apple does not allow Flash. Here is an excerpt from his speech in April of last year (the italics are, of course, mine):
"Besides the fact that Flash is closed and proprietary, has major technical drawbacks, and doesn’t support touch based devices, +there is an even more important reason we do not allow Flash on iPhones, iPods and iPads.+"

The entire speech is available at:
http://www.apple.com/hotnews/thoughts-on-flash/

I would be happier if Apple did allow Flash on the iPad. Fortunately, I can go to my Mac when I need content supplied by Flash. If the Mac didn't support it, I'd have to go out and buy a Windoze machine to fill in the gap.

Flash supports touch events since version 10.1 which was released over a year ago.

And was every single Flash-based web site on the Internet updated to support these new touch events at the same time?

Or do 99.9% of sites still not support them (nor ever likely to), effectively making them worthless until such time that sites do use them?

It doesn't matter. Even if 99.9% of the sites DO support touch events, Apple does not allow Flash on its mobile devices. The whole Apple/Adobe pizzing contest is really unfortunate for the end user as there are many sites that do provide extremely valuable content via Flash.

What "pizzing contest"?
Haven't heard much of anything about it from Adobe or Apple since like May of last year.

And since then, Apple has not allowed Flash on its mobile devices and Adobe has not developed Flash for Apple mobile devices. Neither entity has budged. In the meantime, web sites continue to use Flash to provide valuable content that is accessible only by regular computers and non-Apple mobile devices. I'd call that a pizzing contest that has hurt the iPad user that wants or needs that content. I can and do use my Mac when I need that content but it would be much more convenient if I could obtain it with my iPad.

Flash sites do NOT need to be re-written to support touch events.

Flash uses what's called an event system. So when you create a button or any interactive element in flash you use the event system...

this.button.addEventListener ( MouseEvent.MOUSE_DOWN, myFunction )

Since flash rely's on this event system it requires no recoding on the developers side. The Mobile based version of flash player automatically converts the MouseEvent.MOUSE_DOWN and the like to TouchEvent.TOUCH etc on it's own.

This is also how many atm's, kiosks, car stereos and previous phones were able to use flash for their interface. ( yes many phones actually use flash as their native ui, using a custom made flash player )

Flash 10.1 was the first flash player for mobile web browsers to use this same system, but touch based navigating has long been used in flash, pretty much since it's creation.

Look it up and you will see that more than likely that game at the end of the bar you like to play games on uses flash. So does that picture booth at the mall, their kiosks, and more.

This is why everything ever made in flash worked on Android the day Flash 10.1 was released for download.

Windows 7 machines such as the Gateway all-in-one pc and other multi-touch convertabile laptops running windows 7 do not need a custom version of the Flash player however as Windows 7 was built to support touch from the ground up by using a hidden cursor that follows your finger just like a mouse cursor.

This is how you are able to use a mouse or your finger on a windows 7 touch based machine without needing separate flash player version.

Go to best buy and try it sometime, then stop by verizon or sprint and check out the same sites on their android phones.

Or just watch this video for an example http://vimeo.com/10723525

Just for the record, my above post is NOT suggesting Steve Jobs had lied during his "Thoughts on Flash" post regarding Touch events in mobile browsers, because he was NOT.

At that time Flash 10.1 did not exist, and therefore the current browser flash player did not convert these events to touch events. But within weeks of his post Flash 10.1 was released and now that point is an outdated one.

Just like Flash 10.2 is going to make his point about flash being more resource intensive for playing videos outdated due to the use of Stage.stageVideo, which unlike Flash 10.1 and the touch events will require video players to be rebuilt using the new Object.

But rebuilding a video player is very easy, as most sites have only one in which they display all videos in, such as youtube (which has already converted) as well as many others.

Even the under powered Macbook Air can now play Full screen 1080p Flash videos using less than 15% of the cpu. A feet even html5 will have a hard time beating. Especially as the list of devices grow and the html5 spec grows older.

Flash, unlike browsers has the ability to push out updated driver and hardware support every day.

And without any DRM in html5 this version of Flash will guarentee we still get to watch all our shows on tbs, fox, cbs, nbc, abc etc etc for free and without the need for apps on every machine we own.

What is all this +"extremely valuable content in Flash"+ you mention?

As a web user of almost 20 years, and a web (inc. Flash) developer since 1997 I can't really think of anything I would class as +"extremely valuable+" - and certainly nothing that can't be had elsewhere in an alternative form... The vast majority of Flash stuff is advertising, promotional or games. Truly valuable content is information and news - both readily available in non-Flash form.

What is valuable to you Julian, may not be the same as what is valuable to Philly or me or anyone else, and vice versa.
There are many useful/valuable sites that are not accessible on iOS devices, and that necessitates having access to laptop/desktop computers.
As Philly said, that is inconvenient at times, and it would certainly be less inconvenient if they were available on the iPad.

Please be sure use your iPad to read this post!

1. In December I was in process of selecting a cancer surgeon for a procedure in January. In January my wife did the same thing for a procedure in February. Yes, we had a lousy winter. In any event, this was one of the web pages:

Edit - For some reason, this link does not appear as clickable in its entirety in the forum. You'll need to C&P to locate Dr. Guzzo's talk.

2. I recently wanted to determine just how my tax money was spent. The information was here:

3. I was searching for some guidance regarding Social Security. I found this:

4. I've been shooting Nikon SLRs for some forty-five years now and I'm pretty much committed in lenses, flash heads and other accessories. I was investigating a new camera:

5. I have some involvement with law enforcement and stumbled across these pages:

Naturally, none of these web pages are important unless, of course, you need them. Please identify the alternate sources for me and please be sure to tell me just how convenient it was to locate them.
