Apple TV 2 and AT&T UVerse issues

I've poked around the forums, and seen a few discussions about this, but with slightly different hardware setups, and I didn't see any with a conclusive workaround.

Here's the basic issue: AppleTV has no problem connecting to the WLAN, recognizing available home sharing libraries, etc. When streaming anything that's not local however (i.e., Netflix), the stream stops repeatedly. During a 90 minute movie, the stream was interrupted at least 25 times. Twice, the router seemed to kick all wireless devices off the network momentarily.

I can plug the ATV into the UVerse cable box via Ethernet cable, and the streaming issues are more or less eliminated, but this solution doesn't really work for us, because it makes it impossible to stream any local media (ATV no longer sees any local libraries or devices) or to use the Remote app to control the ATV, since the two devices cannot see each other on the network.

HARDWARE:
Router/Modem: 2Wire 3801HGV with default settings, save for some minor port forwarding for unrelated applications
Apple TV 2
Main media library host: 27" iMac i7, connected wirelessly
iPhone 4, which we'd like to be able to use to push media and use as a primary remote control for the ATV

There are several other Macs, iDevices, a PC and a PS3 all connected wirelessly, if that's at all relevant (we average 8-10 wireless connections at any time).

Optimally, I'd love to be able to run the ATV as intended: with full access to all iTunes libraries and iDevices on the WLAN. It's immaterial to me if this is achieved with the ATV plugged into the AT&T cable box or wirelessly. As it stands right now, however, the wireless setup performs terribly.

It seems as though any advanced networking with the UVerse setup can be quite difficult, but I am willing and able to attempt any known fixes for this issue.

Thanks so much in advance; I really do appreciate your help.

A small update:

Upon further forum browsing, it's sounding like the Netflix streaming issues are a problem with the ATV box (likely the software), and don't appear to be network related.

I have pretty high residential speeds (25Mb/s down, 3Mb/s up; consistently speedtest at or very near these numbers), and can stream Netflix flawlessly on every other Netflix-enabled device in the house (PS3, 2 iPhones, 1 iPad, 1 MBP, 1 iMac), so it's sounding like this just might be an ATV/Netflix compatibility issue.

If anyone is interested, I'm still willing to give any recommended solutions a shot, but it sounds like this is a problem across many ISP and LAN setups. Since I purchased ATV to primarily stream Netflix, I'll likely give this thread a day or two and return it if we can't come up with a fix.

Thanks again.

Having the exact same issues. The only solution, which seems to work for a few days, is powering the rebooting the router when the connectivity issues happen. For whatever reason, I seem to consistently lose connectivity over night (sometime between midnight and 7am).

When I first got Uverse, there was a wireless connectivity issues with Macs that was resolved by turning off Protected Wi-Fi setup. Now the issues seem to be back: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=13090738

These 2Wire routers with Uverse are miserable, and it's clear that AT&T and Apple products don't play well together...sound familiar? 😉

I have U-Verse and an tv and have mine connected via ethernet and don't have any issues using the remote app on my iPad and the tv sees both my Mac Mini (my main streaming computer) and my MBP when it's connected via wifi. Wireless on the U-Verse routers leaves a lot to be desired, I have to reset my router every couple of weeks to help boost through put. That is the only thing I dont like about U-Verse.

I had the exact same problem with ATT u-verse even though I had internet speeds between 10-12 mbps. The netfilx on the apple tv would pause and rebuffer constantly. I tried many suggestions to no avail. Last week, I switched our internet and TV to comcast, and even though my internet speeds are slightly lower, I've had no buffering issues with the apple TV and netflix. I'm convinced that ATT just didn't have the bandwidth to stream movies properly.
