Somebody wants to know what version of unix (BSD? Free BSD? whatever? and version number and release date) runs on Mac computers in Terminal under OS 10.6.x. Does anyone know what it is off the top of their heads? Is there a Terminal command that I can type to ascertain this information?
s and
s to go around to everybody. So, no slight intended, etresoft, but you're a level 4 so I'm dishin' 'em out to the more junior ranking personnel. Hopefully, my "thanx" (and a 🙂 ) is adequate compensation.

Fair enough, but I like to plug the poor ol' Amiga any chance I get. 8^)
Mac OSX uses OSF/1 from the Open Software Foundation which has the Mach microkernel and a BSD emulation layer and was used by NeXT. So it isn't exactly BSD. You can see evidence of this in the mach system calls like mach_absolute_time().
To the best of my knowledge, Mac OS X did not take anything from OSF/1 except maybe ideas.
What they did do, was take the Mach micro-kernel from Carnegie Mellon and the FreeBSD sources to create something that has similar components to OSF/1. Apple even used newer Mach version than any of the official OSF/1 vendors (such as Digital Equipment Corporation's OSF/1 (aka Digital UNIX, aka Tru64 UNIX which I did kernel development work on while a DEC/Compaq/HP employee)).
Then again, I wasn't there when NeXT was started, so I could be wrong. I just do not remember NeXT being part of the OSF/1 consortium.
