Safari and spell checking

Still new and still learning....

I am unable to believe that the safari browser doesn't have a spell checker for typed fields like this one I'm typing in without having to reactivate.

"The Check Spelling as You Type" feature only remains active as long as Safari is open; it must be reactivated each time the browser starts.

Is there a way (or a plug in) that will work around this?

My Google tool bar took care of that (on that old evil PC I have)

The spelling preference should stick with Safari even after multiple Safari sessions. Have you tried deleting your com.apple.Safari.plist file in your ~/Library/Preferences/ folder while Safari is not open (then reopen Safari, select "Check Spelling as I type", close Safari, open it again and it should stick)?

Where would I find what you have mentioned below? I'm in the process of switching from a lifetime of PC and I still get a little lost on the mac file structure

Have you tried

The tilde stands for your username. Go under the hard drive icon on your desktop. Click Users/<username>/Library/Preferences.
