Feb 17, 2011 4:31 AM in response to timothy632by neil51,Thanks Timothy, I was having the same issue as described in this post, your help fixed it for me, especially adding the Google DNS servers! -
Feb 17, 2011 7:22 AM in response to pcullifordby Constantinos Iliakis,OK I would like to summarize all the solutions suggested and the result on my pc..
1. If you turn to 32bit mode of safari, youtube.com videos work. -> some people suggested that conflict exist when trying to run enhancement software that requires 32bit with safari instead 64.
That could be true cause I recently tested -> http://labs.divx.com/divx-plus-web-player-hiq but believe to have it removed completely
2. If you turn on HTML 5 on youtube.com videos load without any problems, however doesn't resolve issue with flash.
3. didnt try dns server addition cause would like to mess them up
please I wish there was something to do as a real permanent solution -
Feb 17, 2011 8:56 AM in response to pcullifordby Katie Miller,Thank you for the help. 32-bit mode does work. But I have two questions. What do I lose by being in 32-bit mode?
And did installing Boom cause this to happen? YouTube was working for me until I installed Boom. When I uninstalled Boom (by GlobalDelight), YouTube still didn't work. -
Feb 17, 2011 11:01 AM in response to timothy632by antk,I had the same problem. YouTube loads but the video area is black and unresponsive with no video playback controls. Everything was working fine yesterday. I enabled the 'Develop' menu in Safari (using Onyx) and changed the User Agent header that Safari sends in the HTTP request to Firefox 3.6.10. This fixed it !! So, could it be a YouTube glitch ??? -
Feb 17, 2011 12:48 PM in response to timothy632by T.Edwards,We shouldnt have to change any settings, I mean ***!!
Was it YouTube or Flash that f**d up?? -
Feb 17, 2011 1:13 PM in response to Katie Millerby andyBall_uk,What do I lose by being in 32-bit mode?
in 64 bit, plugins run in a sperate process, so if they crash, Safari carries on regardless. a plugin crash in 32 bit, crashes safari.
fwiw, youtube still works fine here in 64 bit, so I don't imagine it's a problem with their site code.Perhaps some part of boom is still around, Find any File is good for rounding up stragglers...

Feb 17, 2011 2:52 PM in response to andyBall_ukby krypt0fon1k,Hey guys,
Even though i am also having this issue (with only 1 of my computers) i am putting the issue down to Youtube. I was able to find a workaround though.
http://www.verticalforest.com/2010/10/27/youtube5-version-2/
This link allows you to view the youtube content in HTML5 embedded video rather then using the default youtube controller. Install the Safari Extension by first downloading and clicking and dragging into the Safari window. Check your preferences to make sure the extension is installed, and refresh the YouTube page if needed.
Hope this helps -
Feb 17, 2011 4:50 PM in response to pcullifordby goodwing,Had same problem since yesterday. The flash solutions (I found elsewhere) about uninstalling, reinstalling did not work. But BOTH suggestions listed above (Apps - Safari -Get info 32bit) and the youtube HTML 5 Trial (see link listed previously) worked for me.
Thanks to both posters for the suggestions. -
Feb 18, 2011 6:29 AM in response to pcullifordby J Culwood,I have found this to be a problem with YouTube and not Safari. Using the Develop menu, when I switch to most other User Agents it works fine.
I haven't tried them all, but the only modes it does not work for are Safari 5.0.3 Mac and 4.0.5 Mac. -
Feb 18, 2011 6:45 AM in response to pcullifordby -yair-,Same problem, solved by running Safari in 32-bit -
Feb 18, 2011 8:43 AM in response to -yair-by Bocamama,I also am having problems with YouTube. I just switched from AT&T Internet to Comcast Internet and thought it was that. But now that I read this discussion, I see that it is YouTube. They better fix it soon so my grandson can watch tractor videos with me. LOL -
Feb 18, 2011 8:45 AM in response to Bocamamaby Bocamama,I just tried to send some feedback to YouTube through Safari and got a message that said YouTube does not support my browser. Could be the answer to all our problems. -
Feb 20, 2011 3:38 AM in response to pcullifordby Pete Obermanns,Apparently the problems with YouTube are not just with Macs. If you visit
http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/youtube/thread?tid=5b6f8b8b8014a6d6&hl=en& start=120
you will find complaints from Mac, Windows and Linux users. Similarly, users had various browsers which were malfunctioning; IE, Chrome, Firefox, Safari.
Someone called "YouTube Diego", purporting to be a YouTube employee, posted the following message on 2/17/2011, requesting feedback from users:
"+Some of you are having issues watching YouTube Videos. If you can hear audio, but are not seeing the video, you've come to the right place. Please respond below with the following information...the more info you provide us the sooner we can help you:+
+1) What do you see: (a black box, white box, a green line, weird colors -- please be specific)+
+2) Your Operating System (Mac OSX, Windows 7, Windows XP, etc)+
+3) Internet Browser and version (Safari, Chome 7, Internet Explorer 7, Opera, etc)+
+4) Video Card if you know it+
+5) Adobe Flash version if you know it+
+As a temporary workaround, you can try one, or both, of the following:+
+1) Right click on the player > click Settings > Disable Hardware Acceleration > Refresh your Internet Browser+
+2) Try closing your browser and re-load the video.+
+Please let us know if you have any further questions. We really appreciate your detailed feedback. Thanks for your patience+."
"YouTube Diego" refers to a problem with hearing audio but seeing no video. I think that my problem with YouTube is like most of the folks here; no controls shown to start the video, so therefore no video or audio. In the listing of feedback to YouTube's site, I saw other people who reported the same symptoms as ours.

Feb 21, 2011 7:58 PM in response to krypt0fon1kby cosmeticMUSiXXX,I was having the black box issue too. I figured it was Flash with all the noise about it lately– and yes, with the Safari extension that krypt0fon1k linked to, it works like a charm.
However, it's pathetic that Google can't fix a problem like this, because I'm pretty sure it's on their end. All other Flash content works fine (well, no worse than it always did). -
Mar 5, 2011 3:57 AM in response to pcullifordby J Culwood,I (now) suggest switching to Youtube's HTML5 mode. http://youtube.com/html5
My earlier suggestion of changing the agent type stopped working after a few days, so I reinstalled Flash (removing it first using Adobe's Flash remover), and it worked like a charm. Youtube videos played as they had before... but that only lasted for about 30 mins. My previous suggestion of switching the agent stopped working too (IE8 mode did work though, but I'd had enough).
I now think the problem isn't with Youtube, but with Flash, considering reinstalling Flash worked briefly. Oddly embedded Youtube videos never stopped working.
I switched Youtube to HTML5 mode, and I have no more issues. Videos now play fine, and there are added benefits. Videos load much faster and there's MUCH less CPU usage.
Bye Bye Flash! It's been 15 years of **** with you, and I can't wait for you to die!
