Yes, it's true that changes made on the iPad are overridden by older versions of playlists on the Mac even if music is manually managed.
I'd report this as a bug at http://apple.com/feedback/ipad.html
Hello everyone, I found a solution to the problem:
Step 1: Click the "+" button to start creating a new playlist. This is in addition to the playlist you already have.
Step 2: Give your new playlist a name.
Step 3: When the Song List pops up, do not add any songs. Just click "Done".
Step 4: Now look at the library pane on the left, where your playlists are located. Tap on the red button next to yournew playlist and select "Delete", (the same way you would with an iPodTouch).
Step 5: Now that the playlist you just created hasbeen deleted, go to the playlist you wanted to add songs in. In theupper right you should see a button that says "Edit". Press on theEdit button. Now you should be able to add songs from the Song List.
This process is the only way to use an edit button that I've found. Hopefully, this solves your problem.
