Safari downloads jpg url and opens in preview application

Hi,

I am using Safari 5.0.3 in Mac OS X 10.6.6, and when I click on a URL of a jpg image, Safari downloads the jpg to the downloads folder and opens it with preview application, instead of show the jpg image inside Safari without downloading it to downloads folder. This behavior fills the downloads folder of jpg files ..

Anyone knows how can I configure Safari to show jpg url's inside Safari?

Thanks

Macbook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.6)

Hi Carolyn

I mean, If you have a html page that contains a link to a jpg file ( <A "HREF=example.jpg">Image name Tag) , Safari downloads the image jpg file to the Downloads folder and opens it with preview application.. but It is better that Safari shows image in the sheet without downloads the image file..

Even if I write the url at the web address textbox of Safari.. but not all jpg files are managed at the same way..

Examples:

With this image url , safari downloads the file to the Downloads folder.. and opens preview application to see it:
http://www.centcols.org/quoide_neuf/2008/le-Collet_IGN_panneau_texte_GP1.jpg

But with this image url, safari shows the picture inside the sheet of safari without download the file to downloads folder:

Is it possible that Safari doesn't recognize some jpg images because of they have errors, and download them to downloads folder?

Thank you.. 🙂

I have detected that the image jpg files that Safari doesn't recognize and downloads to the Downloads folder are sent by the web server with MIME type "image/jpg" , and the image jpg files that Safari shows right inside the sheet are sent with MIME type "image/jpeg".

is there any reason by which Safari doesn't recognize "image/jpg" MIME type? is there a easy way to add image/jpg MIME type to Safari?

Thanks. 🙂

Easy way to add: get the PreferencePane RCDefaultApp from Rubicode. After launching it, look on the *MIME Types* tab and you'll see that image/jpeg is associated with Preview. Type image/jpg in the text box at the bottom, then click the + to add it; ensure that Preview is the default app.

Why Apple doesn't have something like this built into OS X is beyond me.

NB: this is also a great app to allow you to specify what app is opened for different Internet protocols, e.g., FTP can be changed from Finder to FileZilla or Firefox, or back again. Nice.
