Aug 20, 2011 8:15 AM in response to Igtswagby Maro rocker,Fix!
I had the same problem. I would hear but it was very low.it's a tell tale sighn that
Something is blocking the mic diaphragm. there was dust thAt
had collected and hardened up in the microphone
Hole. Very carefully scrape it out with a pin, like a thumb tack. I use
A skull candy case and it allows dust to enter and harden.
It worked greAt for me.

Sep 14, 2011 11:12 AM in response to Igtswagby Nader yeganeh,I had this problem too... .
after reading the suggestions, I took a picture with high resolation camera from the mic hole & zoomed it. I've considered that small dust stuck there, then I cut one hair from toothbrush and tried to clean it softly.
it worked...
I'm happy now:D

Nov 5, 2011 12:11 AM in response to Igtswagby Sutopo, thank you. I had the same problem. And solved by cleaning the hole beside the camera on the back. Just use a small needle. Thanks for this tip! I was scared this ruined my facetime. Since I bought this ipod for facetime only

Jan 9, 2012 5:33 PM in response to MadrickBayby Ninap2,Whew. I was convinced it was a hardwire problem but there was an almost microscopic piece of dust in the mic. YOU ROCK!

Feb 4, 2012 8:56 PM in response to banninriseby Benzmum,Helped me, banninrise! I'd returned the shield because I found it impossible to get on. But I didn't realize that little circle of plastic was left covering my microphone. My ipod touch is only 3 weeks old, and I've just got to the point where I tested the microphone - same problem as everyone else. When I poked gently with a needle I saw the bit of plastic and peeled it off. The microphone works fine now. Thanks, everyone! It's good to hear I need to watch out for bits of dust as well.

May 9, 2012 3:18 AM in response to Igtswagby Blackbeantree,Same problem now solved with MadrickBay's solution. An almost pleasing real-world organic reason to this problem.
I cleared the tiny mic hole with a blunt pin and, low and behold, a tiny piece of lint came out. The Voice Memo function now records normally again.
Cheers for that. It hasn't been recording properly for months! No digital upgrade required for this one!

Jun 20, 2013 3:03 PM in response to Igtswagby MrShade101,I also have this problem. I've tried everything in this forum and on YouTube. I used toothbrush hairs, needles, thumb tacks and pins. Still no use. However if I scream at the top of my lungs right in front of the mic I can vaguely hear myself. Can Anybody Help?
