MacBook Pro: Trackpad settings reset after restart.

Hey guys,

Was just wondering if anyone could shine some light on the problem I'm experiencing at the moment.

For some unknown reason, my MBP (current model, with latest firmware) keeps 'forgetting' the trackpad settings I choose every time I restart/turn it off and on.

The issue lies with the settings for enabling 'One Finger' settings, specifically 'Tap to Click', 'Dragging', and 'Secondary Click - Bottom Right Corner'. I'll tick the settings, but after a reboot the boxes are unchecked again.

This is pretty annoying as I'm having to change the settings every time I turn my computer on.

Does anyone have a solution to my issue?

Many thanks,
Luke

MacBook Pro (Current), Mac OS X (10.6.6)

I echo your statements completely nikos_01. I've been searching to an answer for this for months with no resolve until (EUREKA!) this recent post by Barsney-15E and clarified further by Don. Deleting com.apple.driver.AppleBluetoothMultitouch.trackpad.plist from the preferences folder seems to have finally resolved the issue for me.

Very (very) frustrating that Apple hasn't addressed the issue, never mind resolved. It's been ongoing for months, if not years. Very unfortunate as I expect more from them.

p.s. nobody is here looking to create a new account. We are simply trying to resolve the trackpad reset issue... which we believe may now be resolved. Cheers.

it's great that you have found the solution.

let me explain to why i suggested creating a user account. it is a form of isolation to check if the issue is a system wide or not. the file that you have to delete to fix this issue is unique per user account.

Apple even has an article for this step.

If the issue occurs in various applications, or in Mac OS X

For example, if no applications can be opened.

Tip: If the issue began right after you performed a Mac OS X re-installation (excluding erase-installation), see Applications don't work after reinstalling Mac OS X.

The first and easiest test to try is to see if the issue affects a different user account on your Mac. Each user account has customized preferences and other items stored in its home directory. You'll first need to create an additional user if one does not already exist (follow steps a-h below). Then, log out of the current user and test the issue in the new user account.

If this resolves the issue, there may be an issue with a file in the home directory of the original user account.

Hey Mattrock1, this issue is not resolved.

It isn't working for me an a bunch of other people so it would be great if you could stop telling people that it is. I've tried everything, the user account switch, the p.list thing, and a bunch of other things and my trackpad settings are resetting between every 5 minutes to an hour.

If anyone actually has any ideas that will resolve this that would be great. Thanks.

My apologies, Serenity17. You're the first person to post in this thread that this hasn't resolved the issue for you (I don't see any other posts from "a bunch of other people") and there have been posts (myself included) who say this has resolved for them. If this hasn't worked for you, I sincerely apologize for my claim. Boink Boink went off on a tangent which only seemed to muddle the thread hence my stern (and it seems, innacurate) reply to him that it indeed had been.

The post hasn't been marked as resolved, so obviously it's still open to solutions. I'll keep my fingers crossed that the issue doesn't reappear for me, but in the meantime, I'm good to go over here (as it seems others who posted the same)

I should note that the issue only appeared for me on restarts and after sleeping. It sounds like yours is quite dramatic (which I assume might have attributed to your dramatic response, though I can imagine your frustration with it happening every 5-60 minutes). I would strongly suggest taking your machine to the Genius Bar in an Authorized Apple Store.

Cheers,

matt

User uploaded file

but you claimed it to be resolved.

User uploaded file

open to solutions? now that some said that the solution you claim aint working you're open to solutions?

Anyway, now we know that there is no concrete solution yet then it means there are other posibilities that causes the issue.

Serenity17, from what i understand from your post, you already created a new user account and deleted files stated on your original user account, is that right? with the bunch of other things that you said, are you referring to resetting the SMC and PRAM, repairing the disk and disk permissions, safeboot, all software updates installed, reinstall?

if all those are done, i suggest that we create a new partition on your hard drive and install a fresh operating system before you go to a service provider because i'm sure their gonna ask you to do it as well.

if you're not ready for that step, can you launch console(applications>utilities) and check logs based on the time the issue occured, we might get clues there.
