Will the GPS work on my iPhone 4 (CDMA model) in Europe?

Going to Italy in the spring, can I use my CDMA iPhone as a GPS device with offline maps?
Since CDMA is not used in Europe the phone will not connect to any cell phone network, right? Can I turn something off so it doesn't waste power trying, yet still function over wifi?
I'm planning on using the iPhone as a guidebook, compass and GPS, and wifi device. I'd appreciate any info/opinions.

Yes.

You can turn data roaming off. Have a look at the manual for options.

It wouldn't matter if he turned data roaming on or off since there is no CDMA network in Italy to connect to. Saying that, I don't see why GPS with stored maps wouldn't work.

Thanks for the responses, but what I'm going for is minimum power use. I can't find a way to turn off the cellphone part and have GPS working.
