IPP - Please Help

I am trying to get my printer to work via IPP, which is connected to my router via USB. I just got a MacBook Pro and I want to use the IPP option to connect and use the printer. Before I got my MacBook, I used my printer in this fashion with my PC Windows based computer. I am wondering, can anyone tell me how to obtain all the information that I need from my Windows based computer printer setting so that I can fill in the necessary information in the IPP setting in the MAC OS settings. Thus, I need the IP address of my printer (although, I am unsure of the format still. Is it http://something something ??) Also, how do I determine the Queue to fill in when I am inputting the information? Is it possible to get all this info from the printer setting on my PC based machine? Can anyone please lay out the steps clearly and easy to follow? Thanks for your help.

Don't use IPP which is mainly for use with HP printers. Be sure your printer has an assigned IP address or is configured to use DHCP. Then open Print & Fax preferences and click on the ,Add [+} button to add a new printer. Click on the Default icon in the toolbar. In the printer list your printer should appear (this is the Bonjour listing.) Select it and wait for the printer driver to be selected automatically. If it isn't then you will need to locate it in the driver list and select it. Then click on the Add button to complete the process.

If you assign an IP to the printer then choose an address within the range of addresses provided by the DHCP server in your router. If the above doesn't work then:

Open Print & Fax and click on the ,Add [+} button. Click on the IP icon in the toolbar. Select Line Printer Daemon - LPD from the Protocol dropdown menu. Enter the printer's assigned IP address in the Address field. Assign a Queue name - all alphanumeric with no spaces or special characters except the "_" underscore character. Keep to 11 characters or less. Select the printer driver from the Print Using dropdown menu. Click Add to finish.

Consult the printer manual to find out how to set it up for network printing including choosing DHCP, if supported, or assigning an IP address to the printer. This typically is done via the printer's front panel.

An IP address is always in the form of: www.xxx.yyy.zzz where the letters are numbers such as 010.000.001.115 or simply 10.0.1.115.

You can assign a queue name or let the system assign one for you. Same with the printer name and location fields.

You can use Windows to determine what settings you need to use on the Mac. If you open the Printer pane and right-click the printer and select Properties, the Ports tab will show you the connection and path (depending on the version of Windows you may need to select the Configure Port tab).

With this information you can select to add the queue. And you can use IPP - there is not a problem with this protocol, it is generally just an issue getting the queue information correct but since you were printing with Windows then you will have this information.

The other thing to note is that with any IP protocol on the Mac you cannot use the Canon vendor driver. Instead you will need to use the Gutenprint driver, which is listed in the Mac as "Canon PIXMA iP3000 - Gutenprint v5.2.3".
