iPhone 4 Text Message Problems

I just got the iPhone 4 for Verizon last week and so far I love it, I have had a couple issues with texting though.

About half of the texts that I send to one particular friend come through to him as just boxes, and about half the texts I send to another friend come through to her with every other character being upside down question marks...

So far, it only happens with those two people and it only happens with about half of the texts i send, and there seems to be no consistency for a reason (no particular length, special characters, etc.; they are not even both using the same service). Sent and received messages look fine on my end.

Any idea of how to prevent this or fix it?

That is going to be a network problem, if the text does not look like that on your phone. Are they both on Verizon? If yes have them make sure the provisioning on their phones is up to date.

I've had the same text messaging issues and while it hasn't been a show stopper, it IS a major nuisance. Sometimes my recipients get the "upside down question mark" texts and sometimes they get "spaced out texts". With "upside down question marks texts" every other character is an upside down question mark. It looks kind of Arabic. With "spaced out texts" they get texts with spacing between each character and the texts are broken into three or four different messages to my recipients.

This has really become a major annoyance so this morning I called Verizon and found out that they have a "garbled text" ticket going with Apple that is unresolved yet. So I guess we have to live with it for now.

Also...another thing I've noticed with the iPod Phone (that's what I call it because it's basically an iPod that talks/texts)...when you turn your 'character count' on sometimes you have 160 to work with and sometimes only 70. Doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason why.

Sigh...why couldn't my Blackberry have the iPod Phone interface...or why can't my iPod Phone have the functionality of my Blackberry.

C'est la vie...

Hope it is resolved for all of you very soon, keep in mind the Verizon iPhone is just out so there will be a shakedown issue. Find it a bit humorous that Verizon has a ticket with Apple, I've never had this issue with my AT&T iphones, SMS is a standard, since it works on mine this would seem to be a Verizon issue. I've not had the issue with the character limit either, I hope you also reported this to Verizon.

Gee, what a surprise the Apple iPhone borrows iPod functions? Who would have guessed.

This is NOT a network problem, this is a iPhone (iOS) problem.
I get no text messages from AT&T or T-Mobile. Actually I dont get any GSM text messages really to my iPhone.

I swapped phones to my droid X all text message issues were solved. I went back to the iPhone and I ended up with text messaging problems again. This time i swapped back to a basic phone VX-8560 and all my text messages are working again..

Apple you need to fix this.

I have been having the same issue with iphone 4 on verizon. to other verizon users, texts have been completely blank, and to at&t users, the question mark has been appearing between characters. i just tested the emoji emoticon theory, and it works. those texts without the emoticon send fine, and those with send garbled. deleting emoji now from my phone.

i hope this solves the issue for other verizon iphone users!

Really upset right now... got the iPhone last Saturday (Verizon). During the week I noticed that certain people were "ignoring" some of my text messages (they were receiving a few but not all of them). When I asked them in person why they weren't responding they told me they in fact never received a text message from me and were confused. This has happened with three people so far. Who knows about the people I text but never see and haven't had time to determine if that is the case with them too. Didn't think I would EVER say this, but I am missing my BlackBerry right now. I paid way too much money to have to deal with this. There is also no indication that the text didn't go through (as there were on my BlackBerry and all other phones I have had in the past). I am afraid it is getting lost somewhere or even getting sent to someone else on my contacts list...help!

Lauren,

I am a new iPhone user as well that just left BlackBerry. I was having a similar texteng problem and I figured out it was something I was doing wrong. When sending a text message, you will notice in the message box that there are two lines to enter text. The top line is labeled "Subject" while the bottom has no label. What I was doing wrong was entering my message on the top "Subject" line and trying to send it. A text message needs to be entered on the bottom line of the message box. If you enter text on the "Subject" line then this will be a MMS message and you also must enter the body of your text on the line below.

Hope this helps you out.

I bought my iphone4 with Verizon two days ago and it is having the exact same problem. On a longer text to someone with an AT&T iphone they are getting upsidedown question marks on everyother character, and when i sent that same text to someone with Verizon it sent blank boxed texts about 15 times... I'm really hoping this gets fixed. I didn't use any unual characters, but I did use "..." and "?!?" and like I said, it was a longer text. Is there another application I can use for texting until this is fixed?
