Ok, so I purchased an app while it was free and the new update limits functionality; obviously I don't want to update, but I also don't want to see that "1" on the App Store every time I use my iPad. I also don't want to have to keep avoiding it when I update other apps in the itunes store.
How do I get rid of this thing telling me I have 1 update when I don't want it?
Well that *****, why can't I choose to not upgrade and make the stupid notifications stop? I believe your answer because I obviously cannot find a way to do it, but cannot believe they would not have a way if you know what I mean.
Philly, I don't think you get it. There is no latest, greatest to this. The update to the app is to limit it's functionality on the free version. The app was offered as a fully functional trial offer and those that got it have full access. Why would I want to update it? Even the developer says not to upgrade.
Well I guess then that the nuisance of the "1" indicator is something that you'll need to put up with in order to save a buck or whatever the app costs.
FYI, it is a 600 meg cookbook that costs $5. Why you think I or anyone else would pay for something we already have is a mystery. You seem to be one of those people who offer no advice but just feel the need to post. You offered nothing in the way of assistance with my issue so I have no idea what you think you are contributing. The question is not how much something costs, the question is why is there no way to select what upgrades one wants. Unless you have an answer to that or can offer a work-around, your posts are useless.
I have received sufficient input and I thank those that answered without the rhetoric.
Very surprised and dismayed to hear this. I have a cute little app (talking carl) that has an update with changes I don't want. There is a warning on the update page that says something to the effect of IF YOU LIKE CARL DO NOT UPDATE. So it seems to me that apple should provide a means for temporarily or permanently bypassing updates, a la the Microsoft update process. Not being able to bypass an update now has two very undesirable consequences: (1) I can no longer UPDATE ALL, and (2) I might accidentally hit the update I don't want. And of course there's the now ubiquitous red 1 that I can't get rid of.
No. This is a user to user forum. Apple does not read our posts. They do monitor the site, but if you want to let them know how you feel, send them feedback here.

I have a similar issue. I have an app called Perfect Downloader that allows me to download videos to my iPad, including YouTube. It is wonderful, but as you might expect, YouTube doesn't like it, though I am not sure why. The Update itself says Don't Download if You Want to Continue to Download YouTube videos. Obviously, the primary reason I got the app was to share videos from YouTube, independent of buffering. I read the somewhat derisive comments above, but would suggest that there are some common personality traits that many tech enthusiasts share. When I see a number there under App Updates, it calls my name. For me it is like a crooked picture hanging on the wall. I have to straighten it. Ordinarily I immediately update everything, but if I get an update that says DON'T UPDATE in Big Black Letters, I don't want to do it. Somewhere at the bottom of the Update Page there ought to be a button for delete, since there is a button that says Update All. There ought to be an instruction in reverse.
Actually, I think you can go back. When iTunes downloads an app, it sends the old app to the trash (I'm assuming it sends it to the recycle bin on a Win machine). If you restore the old file and remove and re add the app, it might go back to the old version.
