High Load_Cycle_Count Hitachi 7K500

I replaced the drive with a 500GB 7200RPM Hitachi Travelstar four days ago. Model HTS725050A9A364. I have smartmontools installed and smartctl reports Load CycleCount at 13316. If I check frequently, it goes up on value at a time, sometimes 2-5 in about 10 seconds. If I listen for a "clicking" sound, this value goes up every time there is this click. The Hitachi specs for this are "Load/Unload Cycles 600,000". But it does not say if this is an upper limit, a mean, or a minimum.

The 3 year old Hitachi 5K250 it's replacing has less than 20,000 load cycle counts. At the current rate, I'll hit 600,000 in 6 months. In any event, it doesn't seem normal. The drive was restored with Time Machine. There are no unusual processes running, and no related messages in system.log. Certainly not every two seconds.

The description in Hitachi's 176 specification for this drive describes "Low Power Idle Mode" as the heads being unloaded on the ramp, spindle is at full speed. Recovery time to Active mode is 300ms. I do occasionally get these very short 1/8 to 1/4 of a second delays. I type a letter, and it doesn't immediately appear, but before I type the next letter. I click on a button and it doesn't immediately depress. Behaviors I didn't have before swapping out the drive. I have no way of determining if this is drive related or restoration related.

What's the collective say?

Hitachi tech support says if the drive dies it will be replaced under warranty. No comment on whether this behavior is normal or abnormal.

Currently is at 27833 with 134 hours of use. The description in Hitachi's specs indicates this Load/Unload happens with the drive going into standby or sleep modes. So it just seems over eager to go into standby mode. When booted from Linux (Fedora 14) I get the same behavior so this isn't something unique to Mac OS X at all.

New computer, Macbook Pro 8,2. New drive, Western Digital Scorpio Black, WD7500BPKT-00PK4T0. Same problem. ~116 Load Cycle Counts per hour. At this rate it will meet the "Old Age" spec in 215 days. Excessive. I think manufacturers are primarily testing the performance of their drives with Windows and have no idea this is happening, as it doesn't happen on Windows (supposedly). Just Linux and Mac OS.
