Most people would be surprised to know that the *Apple TV (2nd Generation) is inferior than Sony PS3* in terms of Netflix Streaming audio quality. Here is Netflix representative's response on the query:

"Netflix streams contents with 5.1 Dolby Surround. It is upto the end device to output the audio in appropriate manner. Please contact Apple to resolve the issue."

Does anyone know if Apple is going to provide software update for this?

it's not apple that isn't supplying it, it's Netflix.
at the moment Netflix only offer 5.1 audio to the PS3 and no other device.

Netflix have given you inaccurate information.

Embedded Netflix players need to be compatible with Dolby Digital Plus to play 5.1 surround sound from Netflix streams. The embedded player in the PS3 supports it, as does (or will) Microsoft's Silverlight plugin for browsers. The embedded player in the ATV would need a software update from Apple to add support for DDP.

That sounds more logical, however, Apple and Netflix are pointing at each other.

The player needs to be compatible with Dolby Digital Plus, so that would ultimately put the responsibility on Apple. However, DDP for streaming 5.1 surround sound from the Internet is relatively new, so it doesn't surprise me that the ATV doesn't currently support it, but I would expect Apple to release a software update for it at some point.

Another thing I noticed is that Apple TV only outputs 2 channels, instead of 2.1, audio to my Yamaha AV receiver. This is also true for any HD or non-HD movie preview.
